? on Transfer case & front diff

They are both supposed to be pretty stout, you can get an iron diff that is stronger, but also heavier. I think former vendor George Blake had some beefed up transfer case parts at one time, it was a billet planetary iirc. I think SytTyperformance has some beefed up tc parts.

So, you've got 2 seperate sets of parts there.

Transfer case: George Blake (former Vendor) had billet planetaries made, not sure if any extras are still around or if anybody else is making these. Also, 32 spline input shafts are available for use with a transmission with 32 spline output (ie 4L80e or T400). Chains stretch over time and sooner or later will need replacement. Viscous Couplings last for a long time if they are not subject to abuse or mis-matched tire sizes. Stock replacements are about all that's available or needed.

Front diff: As indicated, there is an iron case available, I think they were found in ZR2's with manuals, possibly other combinations (probably the same combinations that also use a 8.5" rear diff). Later model alum cases are about the same as early model ones, but include a drain plug (kinda nice). There is (or was) a PowerTrax locker available at one point. Not sure it's still in production. Not really the best part for street AWD use. I don't know of any firm making a limited slip (clutch or helical gear types) for that diff. Aftermarket support is pretty limited.

With a bunch of effort, you could adapt a bigger front diff into the truck (like the 8.25" IFS from the 1/2 tons) but support for them isn't any better.

Re: ? on Transfer case & front diff

hey bud thanks for the input i figured that much on the aftermarket for these parts as for the vicsious chains are these easy to replace and who sells the best or toughest ones?
as for powertrax i am not to fond of them as they dont well work on street applications for me on heavy cars lol. is there a write up on rebuilding the front diff bearings and seals? as i feel i have a spare here with a bit more play then normal on the driver side although i am not familiar with play on these front diffs the pass side has no play whats soever any input on this would be great.

Re: ? on Transfer case & front diff

what can i do to the front in regards to the play on the driver side output flange?

also in regards to the T/C the only upgrades i would see on being able to do would be a new V-chain and the 5 gear planetary is this correct?

who is the manufacturer of this planetary to try to get a part number as i used to work at HD truck parts down here in miami and still know many vendors?

I don't know what you can do to fix your front diff. They are pretty tough to set up properly, according to some folks I've talked to who do that kind of thing for a living. And from your comment "it has play in the drivers output flange", I'm not even sure what's wrong to tell you to fix.

As far as the Tcase goes, yes, the only upgrade available is the 5 pinion planetary. The 32 spline input shaft is a part that allows upgrading the trans. I don't know of an upgraded chain or viscous coupling available, but new stock parts will certainly be better than worn out used parts.

The 5 pinion planetary was a custom production run. George Blake, a former vendor on here, had like 15 sets made. They certainly were pretty, nice mechanical jewelry. I'm not sure how essential that piece is to have, since there are alot of trucks on here pushing some pretty serious power, and not breaking tcases regularly. They can fail, they have failed, just not the first thing I'd rush out and spend $1500 on, unless you've got money you don't know what to do with.

If you just gotta have one, I think one of the vendors on here took over George's custom bits (input shaft, etc). Don't know that there are any planetaries available for sale....
