Hello everyone, sorry for the newbie question but i'm looking for some advice. I am probably going to buy a 1993 Typhoon with 67K miles on it very soon in Southern California (Orange County). The problem is this:

When I took it for a test drive under hard acceleration the transmission shifted very hard into 2nd gear, and then seemed to not engage into 3rd or 4th, all while under hard acceleration. The whole thing seemed to kind of stall and sputter.

Under normal driving the transmission shifts fine.

Also, there was SEVERE detonation while under hard acceleration and the Typhoon did not have the acceleration I would have expected it to.

I know I need to have a transmission shop look at this before I purchase, who do you recommend and how much do you think I could possibly spend in the worse case scenario?

I'm posting this in engine and transmission because it kind of relates to both. Thanks for all the advice. Kaleb

the truck will run like crap with detonation and will be much slower than it should be. fix it before you get on it again or you wil eb buying a new eng and a new trans.

thanks for the reply,

Do you think there is anyway to tell if the engine has damaged internals? It is a used Ty and I'm not sure of the previous owners. Does anybody have any advice on what they would do to check the condition of the Ty before you bought it?

the best and about the only way to tell whats happening in side is a compression and leakdown test. too bad that won't tell you if he's almost melted a hole in a piston. pull all the plugs and look for major detonoation by seeing if it has any salt and pepper on them.

my question is why buy a truck that has this problem...get a differnt one...don't be in such a rush or you'll pay more in the long run and be pissed all the time about it.

The trans should shift very hard from 1st to 2nd, and not shifting to 4th at wot is not normal, but very common and easy to fix. Not shifting to 3rd at wot though, I’ve never heard of and would take $3000 off the price of the truck. How do you know it’s knocking? If you can hear it I would take $2000 more off for that.
