New tranny in!!! but problem help!

Ok
Eric (smaug), two of my buddies, and I put my new trans (used). Let the truck warm up and added fluid as necessary (no leaks). Drove the truck around came back to find tranny fluid leaking. Part of the problem dipstick tube not seated all the way down. We seated the dipstick tube all the way and now there is fluid coming out where the tv cable goes in to the top of the tranny. it is secured with the one 10 mm bolt, but is still leaking. Any suggestions? Fluid level was alittle high due to us filling it with it not seated properly but not by that much. We though it had stopped leaking so I drove it home about 40 miles it is still leaking, watched temp guage never went over 150, but there is tranny fluid on the bottom, and rear of truck. By the time I got home it was just dripping every 3 seconds or so.
My set up is 700r4, dereale pan(sp?), b&m 24klbs cooler, remote filter, with temp guage. We added 11 quarts of fluid to the truck initially. There was some in the converter already and the pan was dropped for a new filter, and a new remote filter was also put on.
Also a big thanks to Mike Renz for fielding questions at 12:30am .

Re: New tranny in!!! but problem help!

Did you put the rubber bushing on the bottom side of the TV cable housing? It looks just like the one for the dipstick tube only a little smaller. With the dipstick tube, make sure you bolt the braket to the engine or it might keep coming out.

i had that same leak , it was the seal between t/v cable , its almost like a large rubber grommet. it looked like the grommet was rolled over from day one. dealer wanted like $15.00 bucks for it , i went to a trans shop and asked the guy to sell me one and it cost me a whole 55 cents, said he wanted a can of pepsi for it. fixed the leak 100% . trans never leaked a drop, then i changed fluid and filter and it was leaking from there a week later and would actually leak itself 1-2 quarts low if parked at a slight angle.

Thanks guys I called the stealership and they ordered it for me. Should be in on monday/tuesday. I did not see a seal on my old trans and it did not leak. There was RTV on the TV cable that was attached to the trans I put in before we took it off to put it in my truck. I think that will solve the problem. I am going to drain and refill the fluid after I put that seal in. Then I am going to clean the underside of my truck.

Thanks for the replies
Derek

Good luck with your tranny TYTILIDIE.

Well I hope it works for me or I am going to be pissed.

you want to be sure to remove the RTV and make sure there isnt an old seal in the TV cable when you go to install the new one. lots of time the seal will stick in the TV cable when you remove it. also be sure to seat the new seal properly.

Thanks for the heads up Waller...I will make sure to double check the actual cable and mounting surface.

I've got a bag of them. I'll send you a couple for free. Just give me your address.
Like John said, make sure there isn't one stuck in the trans and make sure there isn't one stuck on the tv cable and get all that RTV off. There is a bolt that goes through the dipstick tube to keep it from popping out under pressure(many units had a locking cap on the dipstick). If you didn't put the bolt through that bracket(sounds like you didn't), you may end up with another leak.
Make sure you look the TV cable base over good. If the seal is bad enough, it will look like part of the cable.

Thanks for the offer. I made sure I got all the rtv off the trans before I put the TV cable that was already on my truck into it. but did not look too close at the end of the TV cable to check the seal. (Didn't see it in anyones instructions or posts. I had bought the trans dipstick seal and o-ring/and papergasket for transfer case) I looked at the TV cable that was attached to the trans when I got it and could see part of the seal that was still attached to it plus the RTV they used to seal it. Atleast I know know what too look for.

Re: New tranny in!!! but problem help!

oh yeah, one other thing.. when we were taking out the tranny that was in his truck we noticed that the TCC plug and port on the tranny were both capped off, why would someone do this?

would this just eliminate the ability to lock the torque converter? or would it have some other adverse effect?

We were talking about it and we think maybe just his converter went bad.. maybe his stock tranny is fine, the fluid was perfect and everything looked great inside.. since the converter is what transfers the power we were thinking maybe the slipping was caused by that and not the tranny..
