Need some advice

I have a 92 S-10 blazer 4 door. I want to transform this into a 4 door typhoon. Yes it is a chevy not a gmc. It was a limited edition with woodgrain accent pieces in the interior, black exterior, grey veluor on the door panels and grey velour seats with red horizontal stripes with "Blazer" embroidered on the drivers seat. Digital dash. No rust in the rear sections of the body. Just a little on the inside bottom of the front doors. 3.42 gear ratios. Push button 4x4. It also has some fender flare type running boards. Came stock with a vortec generation 1 series and a 700R4 transmisson. This is my everyday driver and I plan to give it a body off restoration, while doing so turning fantasy into reality. So I need help with the parts. I need to know what exactly is different such as trans, where to find the exterior parts, what wheels to use, I also heard they have a rear air leveling system. Maybe someone could tell me what to do about the wiring harnesses and what to do to retro-fit these systems . P.S. I probably need to find a typhoon with a bad motor.
I want to keep this as close to a stock Typhoon set up as I can.

Re: Need some advice

So, what advice are you looking for?

From what I read, here's what I'd suggest:

Think through what you want to do (write it down). Establish your goals (performance, appearance, other desires). Then work through what it will take to accomplish those goals. Do you want it to be a 10 second daily driver for $4k?

You're also going to need to work out what you're going to be driving while you tear this thing apart. I've got a 1999 Bravada that I've got a 6.0L / 4L80E / NV246 combo in. It's run, but I'm currently working out the bugs that you'll have in this kind of project. I've had the truck apart since April '06. Granted, I don't get to work on it as often or as long as I'd like (work / wife / baby / garage is at parent's house 15 minutes away all work to limit the amount of time I've been able to spend on it). Don't plan on being able to take it apart on friday nite and have it back together again every sunday nite, its just not going to happen.

Once you work that out, start working on a budget (and start saving money now, unless you're independently wealthy). Figure out how to make your budget and your goals peacefully co-exist.

Oh, and don't overlook the drivetrain. The trans will get absolutely hammered by AWD (the trans is the weak point since its tough to get all 4 to spin) so you'll need to make sure it'll take the beating. Check out the drivetrain section. A built 700R4 might not take what you've got planned, might need to step up to the 4L80E, but that's pretty serious (like $4k to $6k for the conversion).

Just some thoughts

Re: Need some advice

Hi Jeff,
I've done a complete conversion of a S-15 Jimmy 4X4. Your chevy is identical to GMC - they even have the same GM catalogue at the dealers...only trim differs.
You'll want a 92 or 93 engine to be smog legal - it _will_ matter later - even if it's only for resale value.
For wiring you'll need the sy/ty engine harness and ECU - everything plugs in.
You'll need the sy/ty front diff for AWD, the syty front driveshaft (propshaft) and the sy/ty transfer case. The 4X4 case won't work, and you _need_ AWD w/ the turbo engine. 2wd just spins the rears and turns the truck sideways - not good at 30 - 40 mph so don't even think about using the 4wd like it currently sits.
Other questions? Just ask.

You are going to have problems making the clading work around the back doors.

Ok so you have done this swap... Wanna move to Ft Worth for a week or two? lol

I have a 1994 4dr 4x4 Jimmy...
I have a 1992 Typhoon that is wrecked

I need to pull out the motor, harness, ECU, front diff, propshaft and transfer case from the Typhoon. Then plug it all into the Jimmy. Just plug and play direct bolt-in?

What about my Jimmy rear end? Swap em?

Then I will need to swap the suspension until I work out a nice bell-tech/bilstein setup into my budget. hehe

I will need new exhaust for the Jimmy I would assume, or at least take the Ty exhaust, cut it and put a pipe extension on it for the Jimmy (2dr to 4dr)

Now what about gauges? Stock jimmy digital dash? I have an 89 normal instrument cluster as well. Do i need to go AutoMeter?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Need some advice

Just make sure the rear is 3:42 any you're OK-although you would want posi.

Supposively, the trans cross bar is different on the Sy/Ty/Astro, so I would bring that over too. Not sure about the torsion bars, although length may factor in if you are putting all this in the 4dr. The keys may be diffrent as well.
