MSD Distrubitor?

Hi gang,

I'm thinking of replacing my 10 year old distrubitor with a MSD P/N 8367 Distrubitor. But at SummitRacing web page they are saying:

Must be used with an MSD 6, 7, 8, or 10 series ignition system.

Is there any truth in that, i thought it was a direct replacment for our stock dist?

Unfortunately, according to MSD, it's true. You have to use an MSD ignition box with their distributor. I called them and asked about this, and that was what I was told. When I asked if they make (or were going to make) a version that works with the stock ignition, the answer I got was, "Why would you ever want to use the stock ignition?" So, I guess it isn't going to happen.... :x

That statement on the Summit website is incorrect.

That dist. WILL work without any additional mods.
I have one and it works just fine.
It is a direct replacement and even came with a C.A.R.B. (smog legal) sticker.

O to the MSD website and look under the Pro-Billet link. You'll see what I'm talking about there.

Which part number did you use? Was it 8597? Did the stock electrical plugs/wiring connect up, or did you have to do some modifications? How long (both time and miles) have you been using it? Any problems or annoyances with it?

I'm very curious, because I would like to use this distributor, but don't want to install an extra ignition box.

Bill,
Auto Zone actually has a decent replacement distrubutor. Just pitch the control module included with it, and replace it with an AC Delco unit. I have one in my truck, and it has performed well. Thanks to CLONE for suggesting it.

I did a little more searching on the MSD site, and whaddayaknow? They do make a version that fits the stock ignition system (#8367). Sure would have been nice if the !#*@^ MSD phone jockey had told me that instead of saying that my only option is to use #8597, which does require an MSD box.

Old, stock distributor on the left, shiny new MSD Pro-Billet unit on the right...

MSD Part #8367 - $289.95 (ouch!)

It's so gorgeous, though... I carried it around the house like a scepter all night after it arrived. "I am the King of Spark! Bow before me!" That went over real well with the wife and pets.

I wanna thank you all for superb information, i'm going to order a MSD dist tomorrow. And if you all approve i'm going to get the MSD wires too, anybody had any problem with MSD wires? I'm sticking with stock coil, getting a new one. I'm deturmen to get rid of my excessive KR and rough running. I'm pretty sure it's the dist/ignition due to that it's intermiiten problems i have and only during high boost.
Thanks again group, don't know what i do with out you guys :)

If you notice there is an asterik next t the part # indicating "Ready to run with your stock ignition"
