Looking for Knowledge and an IFS

You are the Men of Experience, therefore let me tell you what I need before saying “what I think I know.”

I need a GM 7.2 front IFS unit with 3.08 gears. (I’m trying to finish up a 14 year long project.)

What I ‘think’ I know is that: NO AWD 7.2 IFS came from the factory with that particular gear set, but that ratio was offered in the 4X4 versions of the GM 7.2 IFS – AND that the gear-set, along with the correct carrier, can be fitted into an AWD unit. Is that correct?

My second educated guess is that: using the ‘Right Axle tube and Output Shaft’ from any Sy-Ty, Olds Bravada, AWD Chevy Astro or GMC Safari, a 4X4 IFS can effectively be converted to AWD. Is that correct?

Finally, does anyone have either a complete IFS with 3.08 gears that they wish to sell --OR does anyone have a ‘right axle tube and output shaft’ from an “Early/bolt in” AWD unit that they wish to sell?

I do have a GM 7.2 IFS with 4.10 gears in good working order for sale or trade.

Thank you, – and Happy Fourth of July to All,

Darius

Re: Looking for Knowledge and an IFS

Just as an update:

I could not find a used GM 7.2 front IFS unit with 3.08 gears in the entire state of Utah so ordered one coming from Colorado. It should arrive later this week.
Today I also ordered a Detroit TrueTac - Torsen type - limited slip for the rear differential.

The project goes on.

We havent been able to find any 3.08 front ends either. We rebuild them and put torsen front differentials in the stock ifs...

Howdy Aaron,

I just want to make sure I understand about the Torsen units that you have. When you and I talked on the phone my understanding was that due to the size of the pinion gear it would be very difficult to fit your Torsen unit into a case with 3.08 gears. Was my take-away correct?

You are located in Colorado and that is where I found the IFS with 3.08 gears that I bought. If interested I can point you to two other salvage yards in Colo. that also had IFS units with 3.08 gears.

Best,

Darius
