Left Front Drive Axel Question - Updated 12/22

I just pulled my front drivers side axel. Here's the problem. I took out the 6 or so bolts that hold it to the differential and gave to a pull. Well the output shaft on the differential came out too. Is that supposed to happen?

I'm trying to replace the axel. Please confirm for me that the two rings that bolt together are supposed to come apart right?? Are mine just rusted together? SHould I wack it with a mallet to split them? AND, can I just slip the out put shaft back into the axel housing? Need help big time with this one.

Just replaced the axel............and still have the same problem. The farther I turn the wheel, the more it's jerky. It's at it worst when backing up to the right. I tried backing up in a straight line and it drove smooth. Is my hub bad? I just replaced the tie rod, and both ball joints. The hub is the only thing that has not been replaced. Any suggestions? Also, the rim is the stock one.

yep those two should come apart, try a big hammer.

as far as getting the axle back into the housing, just push it in and it should click in when the retaining ring seats in the groove. might need a hammer here, too.

Anyone here have experience with a front bearing going south? I changed my axel and have found that my front wheel does the herky jerky motion when going forword now. If the wheels are straight, no problems. The more I turn the wheel, the worse the problem is. It seems to be coming from the drivers side only. HELP

yeah my right side wheel bearing is dead, i took it apart and de-burred it and sanded it down toalmost smooth, it is a mickey mouse fix, i know but it seems to be okay not 100% though.
Our bearing is a 2 peice bearing, i have heard there is a sealed bb that can be used in its place, i want to find out...
