Interchangable Transfer Cases?

Hey, I cooked my transfer case and am looking for another one... I was searching www.car-parts.com (searches wreckers) and when I do a search for my ty transfer case all i get is transfer cases for chevy astros and gmc safari's.
Are the transfer cases interchangable between all of these trucks? and if so are the astros and safaris not capable of holding as much power?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :D

I think the ty one is similar to a bravada, not sure though. I know a sy trans. case is different from the ty.

Hey Guys...

I'm no expert on the BW 4472 tranfer case, but I have figured out a few things.

Syclones, Typhoons, Bravadas (thru 1997), and Astros / Safaris (thru 1998) all used the same basic transfer case (even a couple of 1996 Blazers with the optional AWD had them).

There are a couple of differences. I don't know exactly how they break down.
1.) There are 2 front output shaft flange diameters
2.) There are 2 rear output shaft configurations (27 spline and 32 spline)
3.) The van cases use a different chain than the others (not sure of the exact differences).

So, you will need to figure out exactly what you have (by research, searching on here, measuring / counting what you have in your truck, whatever) so that you make sure what you buy matches up or can be made to match up.

(As an FYI: Later years of Astro / Safari / Bravada used a completely different case (NV136) which isn't even close to compatible with the BW4472.)

Visit Rockland Gear's website, they've got a fair bit of info available on the 4472.

Id say get a 4l80e with the Silverado transfer case that bolts direct to it and forget the drivetrain problems for ever. That transfer case is for a 5500+ weight vehicle. Search and you will find a good price for them

How many splines does the Sy T-case have? What is the output diameter?

hi, i just had to look at this same issue with my ty,i had a 91 bravada t.c. that i thought would work,it has only 27 spline tail shaft,the drive shft for my ty has 32 spline,the ty is a 93,i found a recycle yard that had a 93 asto van case,still only 27 spline, i bought a 96 safari case which is a 4472,but the guy couldn't tell me if it's 32 spline,when i get it i'll let you know,seems like when i learn something about thes trucks it allways costs me money!! THANKS

Hi, I got the transfer case from a 96 safari astro van still only 27 spline, now i have an extra 27 spline if anybody needs one. my buddy at the gm parts dept looked up the cases it shows the same case for all the awd astrovan and bravada , 4472 but in the parts replacement there are two different numbers for the output shaft, does anybody know if the shafts can be swaped for the larger one? THANKS

Only the outer flange is different, per the guy that redid my case. They are interchangable. He swapped in a Sy case to a Ty.

Hi, i got a t case from a 94 awd bravada,it has the 32 spline output shaft!!
