Installing trans alone

Anyone ever done it, minus a tranny jack that is? Im having a hard tiem getting someone to help me out tonight. I need it in tonight as this is my only time and want it runnig by the weekend so I can go out and beat some ass. Im going nuts here with out it. Ive done the 350 in my Vette a few times alone but not the 700. Wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks to it. I imagine the hard part is getting the trans on the jack while under the truck.

I can be done. I have done it myself. I used some heavy duty nylon cargo straps the non ratchet type to cradle the trans front and back. Loop them over the torsion bars and hook on the frame. I also used a small floor Jack with some plywood under the pan to help support and position the trans.

i've done it alone as well, just jacked up ty really high , put a piece of plywood on my jack and put the trans the jack and rolled it under and up and in it went. having the jack handle lengthwise under the truck and using your leg to jack it while watching rhe front to line it up worked great for me. i honestly think getting the transfer case in alone was harder than getting the trans in alone. i wouldnt hesitate to do it again by myself.

Please remember to use jack stands and put something behind the tire

I block mine up to get it on my transmission jack while under the truck. Piece of cake if you do it right. Don't think that I would enjoy doing it much without a jack though. I have definatelty gotten my money's worth out of mine.

Im definately going to to the strap idea. Getting ready to go down there now and get started. I swear, trans install and removal is a good way to find out who your real friends are, not one person can help out. Except you Tony, yould just slow me down though :lol: j/k. I just wnat this thign in now, I cant wait anymore, I havent driven my truck in like a month or month and a half. Im having serious withdrawls. FWIW, I jack the whole truck up, not the front or just the back. I put my stands kind of where the control arms meet the frame and under the rear axle. It seems like this wouldnt be that good but I push and shake as hard as I can and it doesnt budge before I get under there ofcourse, believe me, Ive experienced first what getting crushed by a truck feels like. The first tiem I did my trans in the TY I didnt have the jackstands set right and my ex girlfriends brother started getting violent with the trans(stuck on the starter) and down it came on top of us. He got out with out a scratch but I was on my side under the frame and it crushed my collar bones together. Thats was the worst thing that has ever happened to me. When it happend here redcently, I was very struck by the event and could seriously relate. Just one of those thigns you only do once I guess. So now, I give it the shakedown. If it falls off then good, Ild rather it fall without me under it. Howld you guys get your Tcases on? Im sure I just have to bench it pretty much right?

yeah , i just lay it on my chest and heave the tailshaft over the torsion bar brace and then slide it on. like i said i think the transfer case is harder than the trans, at least with the trans you can use a jack....

X2 on cargo straps, exactly how I did it althou I had some prob with getting the T-case on by myselft because the splines were hard to fit right.

Damn, I feel mighty proud. I started at 5:30 pm and finished at 8:30pm. Not bad at all IMO. Usually with a helper that knows what they are doing, it takes an hour and a half. I used the strap method and found that it was actually quite easy. The Tcase was real McShitty though. I kept having to remind myself not to let go of it period or it would come down on my face. I had forgotten the trans was hanging down and when I got the tail shaft up, I had to grab the jack handle with my feet and crank the trans up so it would go on the splines. Only thing that really sucks is htat I drove the truck around and it doesnt wnat to shift out of 2nd. First thing I will check is the governor because it came from a seriously messed up tr5ans and I didnt really inspect it. TV cable sounded different as well when I adjusted it. If not, guess the VB will come out. Im sure its something easy to fix.
