Installing a Torque Converter

How hard do you think it is to put a Torque Converter on my self? What special tools to I need? What mods do I need to do for a 9/11 converter! I was thinking of getting it from Brian Hartman. How much do you think it will cost in total?

It's a fairly large job, but not the hardest. Both the propshaft, and driveshaft need to come out, then the transfer case, and then the tranny needs to be completely unbolted so you can drop it down in order to get the TC out, and replace it with the new one.

I'm leaving some minor things out, cause I don't know if you are REALLY that interested in taking on this task.

You will need 2 torx sockets (don't remember the size), and about 3 ft of extensions to get the tranny bolts off in the front.

I forget but I believe the TC from Brian is about $350-$400.

I have done this job 7-10 times and it now takes me about 3 hrs to R&R the whole thing. But it is a lot of work..and if your pulling the trans you'd want to go through it at the same time..esp if your putting a new converter on it...there are a few mods you want to do at the same time so you get the full effect of the 9/11.

The tricky part is to get the new TQ all the way in against the pump, (tricky if you never done it before) If you don't get it all the way in you can trash the pump when you bolt the tranny back on the engine.

Does anyone locally in my area Cincy know how to do it? What are the details on the mods to the tranny? I'm planning on doing this so let me have it. How many person job? How much does the tranny weigh?

You don't need to unbolt the transfer case from the transmission.

Mines coming loose soon for this and wanna get parts in line ASAP...

If you're just doing the converter, you can leave the trans on the jack and drop it down to change the converter, then just raise it back up. Leave the tail end of the transfer case on the rear crossmember.

Hmmm, didn't think of that when I did 2 TC's, now I know better. Although, it was easier to drain the transfer case, and REALLY clean it up inside.

Can it be done with some good 3 ton jackstands or do you have to have it up on a lift? I'm thinking about swapping in the 9/11 converter myself too. Seems like you have to do the job yourself if you want it done right but maybe that's just my experience? The only shop I trust in the South Bay is Speed Merchant in San Jose but why pay them if I can do it myself?

Yeah you can install the TC with that jack, I know a guy that put in his entire drivetrain with the stock syty jack and a hockey stick.
