How do you remove the ring gear in the rear end?

I took the axles out, removed the two main caps on either end and nada. I am smacking it around, prying with a crowbar and it won't budge at all as if it's still bolted down.

The ring gear has LEFT HANDED threads, they are backwards to normal bolts. IE, loosening is opposite from what it normally is, and tightening is backwards as well... Keep that in mind, if I am understanding waht you are asking you want to remove the ring gear from the carrier ??

Ooops, just re-read this... My bad, the 'carrier' should just pop right out, its NOT an interference fit with the housing.. Make sure the axles are completely OUT of hte way and that both of the bearing caps are removed. However, keep in mind, when you do this, you will need to reset the thicknesses for the washers etc to make sure the clearances are correct before you button it back up.

do not fret as this is how they are supposed to be.

if you notice the large dowel holes on either side of the diff cover gasket face there is actually a spreader device that goes in those holes to push the housing apart and lef the carrier come out.

most do not need this tool as their carriers are installed somewhat loose and this is not needed. you might be the second person I will have ever known to need this tool.

yeah i popped the caps off but this thing won't move at all. I was going to remove it to see how badly i damaged the hole that holds the screw to retain the pinion gear pin. After an hour or so of trying to remove the entire gear i decided to try and thread the piece of the bolt i had left into the original hole and it took. I am amazed because i really thought i mangled the hole but it seems to hold pretty tight still. I shot some brake cleaner in there and i cut a bolt to act like a pin and then used the good part of the bolt with a glob of red locktite and threaded it back in to hold everything together. I hope to now finally get some brake work done. I can't believe a 2hr ls1 disc swap has turned into this. :x
