What method are you using to control converter lock-up for your application??

I can think of about 5 different ways but would like to hear what works on your truck.

1. Let the ECM-via chip or code 59$:screwy:
2. Manual switch-else cheapo $:)
3. Vacuum switch-decent $$:(
4. B&M switch-more $$$:roll:
5. ALDL pin? Anybody?:squint:

Actually, I can think of a couple other methods to use but those are re$erved for further re$earch. :D;)

I have been using numbers 2 and 5 for more than ten years with no problems. All you need to do is ground the "A" and "F" pins on the ALDL. You can see the layout here if you don't know it.

Why lock it up? Silly question but just curious of benefits!

It's a quick way to drop .2 a second off your times at the track. However, it IS hard on your transmission. My bud who has a *very* loose 9/11 torque converter, drops .5 second (syclone) when he locks his...

I have a 80E and TCI ez tcu to control mine, you can set when it locks but this is only cruising unlocks at wot, however it does have a provision to be able to lock it with a switch which i will be doing over the winter, my question is when do you lock it?, right after you launch or past the 60ft?

I had a really loose stall and have ordered a replacement but to check it wasn't 1st gear in the 80e crapping out on me, I set the TC to lock at about 6mph. You can adjust it according to your preferences in the TCU.

6mph was too low but once the engine got into the sweet spot, it pulled like a train, proving that 1st gear was fine. I imagine you would need to try a few runs at different mph/rpm and see what works best.

Ideally your TC would lock in every gear as soon as the converter is within about 5% of its rated stall speed but that would require the converter to lock according to rpm. The PCS unit only responds to mph vs throttle position. I don't know how yours works. :dunno:

If you had one of those shift lights, presumably you can set your shift points? So if it can illuminate a light, it could close your TCC lockup for you... that might be one way, if there was any benefit...

code59, I set mine at like 45mph or something close to that. Seems to work well for driving around (cruising happens really gentle). For wot it happens in the middle of second gear.

I set mine for 70mph in code $59. I have a manual switch wired to the A-F pins. I didn't see any difference when I forgot to lock TC at the track in 2nd gear the last time. When I had the stock turbo 2nd gear lock up netted me 1.5mph, ET differences were maybe a .1.

Same here ^.. I didn't notice much when I manually locked mine at the Track. I also need to adjust when it locks at WOT in Code59 next season. Mine is middle of 3rd.

It would close a relay for sure if lightbulb is not a full 12v(like LED). This is most commonly accomplished with a RPM window switch.

I believe some trucks have false knock due to the converter engaging and disengaging in the 2-3 shift. It's probably causing the dreaded converter shudder some of these truck experience. :2cents:
Don't hold me to that. I'm speculating. Locking the tq/c would help, right?
I'll have to try this on mine and see if it does.

For clarification, my results were on based on advanced timing and 20 pounds of boost on my old Ultimate chip set up. Simply locking up my converter at stock boost level had little if any effect on my ET's.

As the TC has a clutch, clutch application shudder is analogous to dropping the clutch on a manual trans. The engine / gearbox will shudder until the drivetrain is finished slipping. That's what I would attribute it to. I'm sure there are other reasons. Basically, applying TCC when there is too much difference between the two sides of the TCC.

You should have a TC which is 95% efficient at stall speed. Once there, TCC apply means the driveline is locked and can handle more tq than perhaps the converter can. If people aren't seeing benefit from their TCC apply then I suspect it is because they are not making enough torque to overpower the TC/their TC is matched properly to their power.

If you had a loose converter and went above a certain tq, the converter can't handle the tq and the truck wastes power. Trans fluid gets hot. The turbo spools and says you have 25psi but youre not really going anywhere. In this instance, applying TCC at the right point would prevent the power from being wasted and apply it fully to the ground. This assumes the clutch can handle WOT lockup.

That's how I understand it.

if you wire a switch to it, it will lock up after it shifts into second and unlock again under 10mph or 1 st gear.

I mean do you go by converter stall speed? Brake stall? Or gear?

I found some info about converter shudder. It is at the bottom of this page. It would seem commanding lock up helps cure some of the problems our trucks came with. Enjoy!:tup:
