Having a hard time finding cv axles

Both of mine are puking from the outer joints, so I planned on going the replace route with rebuilt units, ordered some from advance discount conglomerate. 4 days later I pick em up (they were out of state) and go to put em on.

The splines slip into the hubs, but the overall length of the axle is too long for me to mount the inner flange on, double check and sure enough - they are longer then the originals.

Back to the store and cross-ref a 4x4, they had 2 on the shelf, so swap these out with those. Checking in the store for length this time and it all matches up with the originals.

Take em home, and the outer splines wont even go into the spindle, same count, just wont slip in.

Well, they are out of parts that I havnt tried, autozone doesnt have any listed for our trucks (online anyway) and I'm beginning to wonder whats going on.

I mean, I thought all this crap would be the same for the s-series line, I'd be amzed if they changed lengths or spline sizes, whats goin on?

Hood caries Cardone units, and I've seen that advance carries them through thier online store (not in store) and was going to resort to them if I cant find anything else.

This just shouldnt be this hard....

After getting my new shaft home , painting it and greasing it up . I mount it to the front diff and find out my wheel bearing assembly wont fit on the shaft . Shitty , I take it back and get another , this time with my hub in hand . Just my luck , it doesnt fit either . Apperantly Avance discount Auto p/n 9436 is INCORRECT . DO NOT BUY

I had the same problem back in Nov .You can use those store boughts only if you replace the front hub assembly as well . For some reason the splines are larger . Just reboot your old ones .

just to cross-reference mrking's post: http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=32660&highlight=wheel+bearing+assembly

I'm still leaning toward rebuilt shafts, I've rebooted an axle on my honda before, and that was a real pain (less then waiting 2 weeks and the above hastle), but I'm just a little worried about any damage to the joint itself.

How do you reboot these guys anyway? Im guessing you have to pop out the cap on the inner joint flange and pull everything apart from there out?

Napa Part

Napa #9436 seem to be the right fit, although there's an older thread that says that the boots may rub/wear on standard shocks. This may not be a problem with your coil-overs, though.

orielly's has a special tool that will let you put the new boot on without taking the shaft apart, it's air operated and looks like it'd be pretty cool but it's around 100 dollars

Re: Having a hard time finding cv axles

9436 is a CCT axle (Car Component Technolgies) while 601000 is an A1 Cardone axle. Both of these should work and cost around the same. Advance/AZ/O'Reillys/etc... should all use a variation of these numbers as these are the 2 largest cv axle rebuilders in the country. If the spline itself is larger then they may be giving you a full size axle (9417/60-1009) which would likely have a same count but larger spline.

BTW, you may want to ask if they offer new axles. We do (for $69 per axle) and they don't require a core. So, you could keep & repack your old ones for spares.

Re: Having a hard time finding cv axles

I got mine from NAPA, they fit A+ and I haven't noticed any clearance problems with the coilovers... I did replace the hubs but they're identical sizewise on the spline to the old ons... checked that

I also put NAPA parts on when I installed the coilovers. One inner boot puked right away, covered by warranty. Not hard to change out, either, with the coilovers.

Napa now offers whats called a "Max Drive" CV for our trucks. They are brand new units with a lifetime warranty and are much beefier than stock. They are claimed to nearly unbreakable. Here is a link.

I think the only person who has broke a halfshaft was Ed hess when his rear Axle broke but i could be wrong.

Re: Having a hard time finding cv axles

Geez, NAPA is a bit high on those. For those interested in new axles, look into Summer & Company. They're the new axle provider for most independent warehouses. Someone local to you may sell from them.

Also, a bit of advice on reman axles. Before you put them in, lube the outside of the boot well with a non-water based rubber revitalizer (like ATP Reseal AT212) and inspect the clamps (and reinforce if necessary). I almost always double clamp them if there's room or (at the very least) put a thick, heavy duty zip-tie around each end of each boot.

Mike about CCT: Car Component Technologies, which specialized in rebuilt axles for front-wheel drive vehicles, closed its product plant in Bedford and its distribution plant in Merrimack on Nov. 17 when its parent company, American Remanufacturers Inc., declared bankruptcy.

I know advanced used them in the past, the manager at my advance said he was positive if they had any cct axles in, they would have fit.

Hood, you need to open up a store down here ;)

Yes they do have a lifetime warranty. I would love to see someone break one. Then I can give our rep a ton of crap about it.

That'd be almost too much fun to get a fully built tranny to do like a 25psi launch on slicks to do it too..

Whats the total price of everything Hood? Mine are fine, but just so I know if they start to go out..

Yeah that would be sick as hell. I hope to to that when my truck is done, but I have a ways to go yet.

Strange....apparentely someone either bailed them out or bought the right to use the CCT name, because we still have access to them all day long (and not just existing stock either). Regardless, we use A1 more than CCT as they're cheaper and identical quality.

Can't open up a store down there......it'd get destroyed when Hurricane Yukon Cornelius comes through in August. ;)

Re: Having a hard time finding cv axles

I bought 2 new ones from autozone(had to be ordered from another store), one worked the other didn't. when I went to return it for a new one they said they will refund my money but they cannot get anymore axels for me, they are out of stock and could not order more. That sucked because that axel was holding up my front end rebuild. I went to advance auto parts and they got me a new one the next day worked great cost ($109)a little more than autozone but I had no choice. Anyway bring back your axel for a new one at advance auto and eventually you'll get one that works.
