Got a moan. What could it be?

I get a little moan after I let off the gas when I'm above 60. It's kind of a continous hum until either I throttle up or am at speeds under 40 or so. It's coming from either the trans, x-case, or the front differential. It kind of seems like the truck isnt going into OD. But then when I put it back in D it gears down so it make me think it may be going in OD and the problem may not be the tranny. And the hum doesnt seem to come from the xcase either. What could it be. God I hope it isnt the trans...

My Ty makes a similar noise, a low growl under acceleration. I think the vibration/noise is coming from the rear differential, but not sure. I've had other vehicles with worn rear ends make similar noises when decelerating, its usually worn pinion bearings or the ring and pinion. But never had something that makes it when accelerating, strange, I also thought it might be the t-case or something else. Haven't investigated it yet though.

No. Mine is not under acceleration. It's anytime I let off the accelerator over about 50 or so. It not coming from the erar either. It's either the trans or the front differential it think.

Todd, ususally that humm when you let off is from the rearend gears have too much backlash or are worn out in a rwd car. Check your gear oils first and transfer case fluid. Its probably not the transmission.

Rear End has brand ne Valvoline Synthetic Gear Oil. Everthing looked good when I took off the rear dif cover too when I replaced it with one from Summit. Also xcase fluid was changes about 1000 miles ago too with Mobil 1 Syn ATF fluid. It was doing it before and after. The only fluid I havent changed is up front. I also change the ATF in the trans with GM DEX 3 1000 miles ago. It was doing it before that too. It makes the same sound as your talking about Joe but it just doesnt sound like its coming from the rear. Who knows???

Hey, I have the same groaning, moaning sound when I let off the gas to coast. The sound seems to be coming from the left front wheel area. First, I thought it was coming from my front differential, so I had the whole front differential replaced ($1800), but the noise is still there to this day. The weird thing is, if I give it a little throttle, then the noise goes away.
