Just modified a 4x4 propshaft to replace the awd toasted cv joint.

here's pics and part numbers, would tell you how it performs, but my truck is on stands for a while still. :roll:

propshaft to t-case, spicer 5-350 u-joints, spicer 2-2-939 flanged yoke (http://www.rockforddriveline.com/2_FlangeYokes.pdf), and metric 10.9 hardened bolts:

1988 4X4 shaft and 88 front yoke out of a blazer / jimmy, swaps right in to the front diff, same u-joint as stated above:

Total cost:

shaft and front yoke :dunno: came w/ truck
shorten shaft to 23 1/2" joint to joint, weld, balance, press in u-joints : $60
spicer 2-2-939 flange $24
spicer 5-350 u-joints from napa, p/n: 210-0350 $31

If you do go w/ this setup, please first purchase the flange and yoke, bolt into place then measure from center u-joint to center u-joint to convey the length to the driveshaft shop. I've got a 350 shoehorned into mine w/ a bravada t-case and not sure if everything would measure the same for yours.

Perhaps I should have said READS :lol: ? ... Looks like a nice truck, but I'm not sure how many people would have their own shaft built when they can get an indestructible Gilbert ... unless they have a 4l80E or something fun like that :tup:

It actually looks much like Gilbert Drivshaft. He had mention to me about using a 4x4 front yoke.

So, like $110 for a Gilbert-esque shaft? I'm gonna need something for my Ty pretty soon here but can't bring myself to spend the big bucks on the Gilbert.

dayum tootin! Like I said, not sure how it will perform, just found all kinds of metal shavings when I changed the oil, so the engine is going to get yanked sometime in the future, still have to have the rear driveshaft modified to fit, came out of a 4 door bravada, I have a 2 door jimmy. I'm sure the front propshafts are the same in the 4x4, this was a 85 GMC Jimmy w/ 88 running gear, 2.8l V6, 5 speed, 4x4. I purchased it as a unfinished project, every nut and bolt has been turned on this truck and nothing was finished on it.

He already had the driveshaft so you would have to acquire one of those. In someway it would make sense if Gilbert was modifying a 4x4 shaft. Most of the costs would be new parts. The steady price increases could be coinciding GM prices increase.

Hey guys, I have a local driveline shop around here making me a similar front propshaft to this one:

After speaking to them, they tell me that they use these same size and materials in the propshafts they make for up to 1-ton 4WD vehicles, and have no problems with them. It really looks like the supershaft McCoy is selling. I needed a custom-sized unit made. I gave them the specs yesterday afternoon, and will be picking it up tomorrow AM. Total price for a brand new unit: $289+tax I will post pics here really soon - looks quite stout, and a bit cheaper than $525 they want.

Nothing against your local shop because I'm sure their great but for that little of a difference I'll go Gilbert because it's proven in the community and I know what I'm getting. If they offered something cheaper I think you might have more interest.

I understand everyone's apprehension, but when the Gilbert first came out, who knew it would be as good a product as people here state they are? Someone had to put it in their truck and see a difference, and that is exactly what I am putting this here for. $400 shipped is a bit high....I think with this one, you'd be around $340-350 shipped. I just got a call from them, I can pick them up anytime now. I cant make it out there until tomorrow AM, so I will post pics then. The joint is substantially stronger than the stock unit, and the diameter/material of the shaft itself is much larger than stock. I saw a few units they had there for some 1-ton trucks, and they are impressive to say the least!

Hell, I may be able to talk him into a lower price for a GP....I can always ask!

If you are referring to hex head replacements for the stock stock propshaft, I sell them:

Mike sells them and is great to deal with from what I have seen on this forum, I found a speciality fasteners store not too far from me and they carry them. What Mike is asking for them isn't much more than what I paid and would probably make up for my time and aggrevation.
