George converter Question

George I dont know if you've been following my other post or not but ive been trying to figure out how to use the big stuff trans controler. Ive got some logged runs now and it seems to make more MPH when lockin up the converter in 3rd gear. My last outing the converter fully locked up in 3rd @5700 Rpm the droped my rpm to 4800 then climbed up to 5800 to finish the run. This was at 125.90 mph It feels like it pulls alot harder when lockup up. The question is do you think its ok to try to set the converter to lock up as soon as it shifts into 3rd gear. I think this would help trap higher MPHs thus a lower ET.
If i lock up the converter later on in 3rd gear my MPH goes down say to 122. What do you think????

My answer in the other thread will help you. Your finding out why these guys lock up the converter at the track. In the future if you have something specific for me, post it in my forum down at the bottom there. Syty.net set me up with a forum for questions just like this.
Oh, and yes, your safe locking it up. That's why we did the billet input shaft and multiple clutch lockup in yours. I knew you'd come to this point.

Re: George converter Question

Locking them up won't hurt the tranny at all.

Depending on manufacture of convertor (PI probably has best lockup), you may or may not damage the clutch over time. Basically it will wear out. If you have a PI it shouldn't be a problem.

To lockup or not is going to be very specific to each truck combination, parts, when to lock it up, etc.

On Jeremys truck it is a huge benenifit locking it, but he has a bone stock motor, stock turbo, so the motor doesn't like to rev very high, by locking it we keep the motor where it is making peak torque.

Really you need to look at your torque/hp curves and try to maximize shift points, lockup, etc so that the rpm stays in that peak. One drag racing theory is to shift at 110% of peak.

Again you won't hurt the tranny, Jeremy has been trying for 3 years to do that and he hasn't found a way yet and his tranny is a much less build than you have.

Re: George converter Question

Jeff makes some good points. Another thing is that there is a step up from the converter that's in yours, Frank. We can got to a 5 clutch 10.5" that's rated at 1500HP. Sounds rediculous doesn't it? Take all the stuff you knew about 700s and throw it away. As long as you keep your line pressures correct and don't shift it too hard at too low of a throttle position, it will hold up for a LONG time. Your truck just doesn't weigh enough to be an issue for the build you have. Yours is built way beyond Parrish's if that gives you any perspective.
