i lifted my truck off the ground and looked under it while it was in drive and my friend hit the gas and the front prop shaft was spinning but the front wheels were not. also if you spin one wheel are they all supposed to spin, how does all of this work does anyone know?

Well that's a good and bad thing.

The good news is, your transfer case is probably working ok.

The bad news is you've definitely got something wrong in the front diff. I'd expect that one of the two half shafts isn't plugged in (not being retained by the retaining clips) OR something is really broke inside.
The drivers' side half shaft is 1 piece, so it should be really obvious if its plugged in (or else it'd be falling out).
The pass side shaft is 2 pieces, if either one of them became unplugged from the rest of the diff, that would also cause the problem (or the same problem if it was broke in two).

Other possibilities: Pinion shaft is either broken or removed all the teeth, ring gear has a bunch of teeth missing, or the spider gears are broken or not present. I can't think of anything else that would be likely and cause the problem you're seeing.
