front wheel axle nut, what size socket?

Please tell me what socket I need to buy before I make three trips to Sears.

I need the outer nut removed for the steering knuckle/bearing assembly.

I was glad I didn't have to buy a socket... I already had one. It's the same size as a VW alxe nut.

yea jimmy it's a 36mm nut...had to buy one to change my wheel bearinngs and do my front diff swap....thats a good guess of the top of your head tho :lol:

It also a deep 36mm. At my Sears, they sells it in the automotive specialty section.

I have the shaft cut down for the Vette rims.
However the nut will not budge with a few honest attempts.
Maybe I should set up a poll.

Air tools will work but I am asuming you don't have those since you asked this question.

Have someone stand on the brake. Use a breaker bar (I put on a 3' pipe over the end on the bar for extra leverage) Before using the brakees, I tried doing this with the wheel on the ground and I was spining the wheel before the nut would loosen.

I will have to try the cheater and breaker bar.
Maybe borrow some air tools if things dont go well.

Yeah I remember doing this on my old ty a while back and my brother (270lbs) used the 1/2" drive breaker bar and ended up shearing off the 1/2" drive peice into the socket in a twisting motion. He didnt use a pipe for an extension either. We eventually got it off though....thank god it was a craftsman breaker bar so that was free breakage. Good luck getting those off....you will im sure, but it may take a while at first.

when i did mine it took about a good 10 secounds with a 2hp 120psi 1/2" impact gun....best of luck using your own body strangth to do it

I had to jump on the cheater bar to break mine loose.

I was using a floor jack on a few attempts but the jack didnt have enough range to do the job.
Now that I know it can be near impossible I will wait to borrow the air tools.

I have done two differnt trucks in the last couple of months, it wasn't that hard with a pipe extension and breaker bar. I was more worried about something slipping and denting/scratching the truck than the force needed to remove it. I definately didn't need to jump on it, I have put more effort in getting brake caliper bolts off than the breake bar with an extension.
