Front diff flange removal

Got me a big, beefy, black shaft now
To install it, you must remove the front diff flange. I figured it would slide off with a few taps from a hammer, but so far no dice. The syty service manual shows some kind of GM puller to do the job.

What did you guys use to remove this flange? Hopefully something available through Autozone's loan-a-tool perhaps?

Did you get one from Gilbert Driveline in NH? I used a 32mm 1/2" drive socket from Autozone in my impact wrench to take mine off. Took about 5 seconds to remove it as after the 32mm nut is removed, the flange just slides off... Don't forget to mark the position of the nut in relation to the shaft with a marker BEFORE you take it off. That way, you can get the yoke torqued down properly. HTH's

Mine didn't slide off by hand, so I used a pry bar, to get mine off. It took me one very very light pry to get it loose. I think screw drive would have worked.

Yeah, I got the one from Gilbert. However, my front diff was rebuilt back in Dec with a new ring/pinion. The guy must have used some kind of super adhesive loctite on the splines or something. I've been prying/beating on the thing for about 10 mins and it's only moved about .25". Guess I'll just keep prying then. Thanks guys.

mine just slid off once the bolt was off try a gear puller so you pull on it evanly

Finally got it off. Had to keep beating on it with the hammer, but it finally gave in. Got my brackets cut and welded, so another .5 hour or so and I should be back in AWD.

Just because somebody else had a problem removing the pinion flange,don't just automatically assume that you will too.

After reading this thread I went to remove mine.and gave it such a mighty tug that it flew off and hit me in the face :lol: :banghead:

Just wanted to pass this info on.....

LOL yeah I read the post.I tried to gently pull it at first,then unleashed my fury on it :roll: It smacked me right in the nose,thought I'd broken it with all the blood gushing out.But I'm fine,and the truck seems to like it when it makes me bleed :wink:

On a side note, "search" brought this old thread right up when I needed to know the size of the pinion flange nut

Don't know if U were aware, but that flange needs to be tightened back with a certain preload, which requires a preload tool.

Why does it have to be removed anyway, does this shaft use a different flange ? Is it included with the shaft, and if not, where do U get the different flange ? - in case I have to get one.

I still have the original one on mine @ 100K +, guess I've been lucky. But I've retooled w 2x the HP, so I'm thinking the old stocker probably won't last.
