Front dif

Anyone ever broke one? Well besides me. Went to thetrack and was on tne brakes at about 6-8psi and hear a loud snap/pop let off the gas and get out to look and then get the dreaded stream of gear oil running out of the front of the truck. Get in and try to back up and it went about 5-6 feet and clunck stoped dead.Had to pull up to get it to clear the chunks so I could back up so more. Took about 6-7 time to get it out off the starting line and out of the way. But It was moving the pass before it broke. Went 6.80 @106.4( spun the tires the last half of 1stand most of 2nd) on 20-21 psi. Got a guy fairly local that said he has a 4x4 93 blaser that has the 3.42 gears in it. Hesaid he would sell the diff to me for $150 and he would even pul it for me. Guess I an goig to have to start pulling this thing to the track.

Re: Front dif

That thing is hauling some serious ass. What cam is in it (if you don't mind me asking) and what does it weigh? For some reason I thought you had the 422? It seems unusually fast for what you have done to it! Nice work!

Re: Front dif

I have had them go out, but not with power. I think you might be the fastest code59 user now though. We need to add a timeslip/dyno page for code59.

That was a 10.7 run.

Re: Front dif

Tooky it does have the 422 in it. Weight? thats a good question it doesn't have a/c and I just put the coil over kit on it. I am just getting started I have only been using one of my alki nozzles.

On the code 59 thing. Guys I cant say thanks enough for coming out with this. And for anyone contemplating the plunge. Do it and never look back.

Re: Front dif

Ok I give... How the hell do you get this diff out of the truck? Do you have to pull the motor or something like that? :rotf:

CV Flanges (6 bolts each?), and propshaft have to come apart. Aside from the bolts holding it in, take the steering "link" loose (at least at the pitman arm). Be prepared to "tweak" the wrap around bracket at the rear Diff mount bolt.

Two bolts on the pass. side axle tube (easy), two on the diff itself (front one requires putting the closed end of the wrench through an oval hole in the frame to hold the nut, back one is cake).

Will probably need to jack up the pass side (via lower A-Arm) to get the flange to clear (need to drop pass. side first). My mounts were (are) so bad that I'm having to raise the engine just a bit to allow the diff to rotate enough to drop out (I discovered this after replacing the gravity generator in my garage thinking it had gone out).

There's a few threads about this a lot better than my description, but take it for what it's worth. There was one where (dunno who) managed to get it out without disconnecting @ the pitman arm, still not sure how in the world he managed. Thought I was in the same boat (pickle fork not big enough) so I got creative:

Best of luck, keep us posted.

Re: Front dif

Well got the diff out and took it apart. Wow I broke it good. The two gears that are on the shaft(well used to be there) are each in about 6 pieses. and they in turn took out the rest of the gears. Three teeth broke off the pinion, 4 teeth off the ring and a couple chipped ones on the two gears that the axle's fit in. Does anybody make a spool for the front diff.

Re: Front dif

jwaller has (does?) read through dome of his threads on front diffs, sounds as though this setup isn't too "street friendly".

Re: Front dif

I would imagine that putting a spool or locker in the front end would make the front end that much weaker. If you are able to break it with what you have now imagine how easily you would be able to break it with no give what so ever in the front end.
