Exhaust!

So i decided to jack up the ty and look more in depth at the exhaust. I am planning on fixing it soon so i wanted to plan out what i needed. It seems that the stock downpipe is fine and connected to the stock CAT which also looks fine. After the cat they went from a stock dimension pipe which if im right is 2 and half and did some crap weld to a three inch pipe to the muffler. I dont have a end section took that out last year becasue it was banging around.

My question is this......I have an ATR muffler which is going on and the rear section will be stainless. Should i change out the CAT as well with one from summit racing??? I have read that they are more free flow then stock but will also let the truck pass inspection. Or should i just leave the stock CAT and do the rear section. Will changing the cat be a positive or negative thing.

P.S my truck is stock besides a Kenne Bell intake and planned to stay stock. :tup:

For those who changed out there CATS with one from summit what are they using??? Also should i get a 3inch in and out and just make it a three inch from before the cat all the way to the end.

What is the dimension of the stock downpipe? 2 1/2 or 2 1/4?

Looks like its 2 1/2 and if so this is whats recommended from summit to fit. Its a magnaflow. 2 1/2 inlet and 3 inch outlet.

Stock downpipe is 2.5"

I've only used a magnaflow cat once and it didn't last long but others have used them with good success im sure. So if the price is right for you that would be a simple solution to replacing your cat with a higher flowing model while also taking care of the pita of getting your 2.5" downpipe mated up to your 3" catback.

Also remember although this seems to be different for each truck and owner.. but when modifying the stock exhaust setup on a completely stock truck. Be careful not to open the flow up too much because the stock wastegate has trouble keeping up and will result in boost spikes or boost creep.

I had a pair of magnaflow cats on my NA El Camino and they blew out quickly. The one on my TY also blew apart after about 6 months and clogged up. I didn't have any luck with them.

I used the magnaflow direct replacement and six months later it seems fine. I only paid $80 from Jegs, must've been a clearance because I just checked and they don't seem to carry 'em anymore. Although they say its a 3" outlet, its actually about a 2" opening because of that rounded mating surface where the pipe bolts up. One minute with a grinder give me a 2.5" opening.

If you think your cat is ok and the truck runs fine, I personally wouldn't mess with it. If you have any doubts, you may want to try and take the cat off and look at it. Here is what I found! Be warned- its tough to get them off without grinding/cutting. :tup:
