Dumb 4x4 -VS- Typhoon question.....

Ok... Why do Typhoons turn great in a parking lot or anywhere else being AWD

When I push the 4x4 Button in the 98 Jimmy it acts all goofy if you want to turn hard (as most 4wds do...

Is it in the Transfer Case? or the front differential that makes the difference?

It's a dumb question but I don't know the answer.

AWD is not the same as 4WD. 4WD is locked up, no give, jump sideways during a tight u turn. AWD uses the viscous that gives depending on shear load from front versus the rear. It is the t-case if that makes sense.

Ok... so it's the Transfer case... I should switch the T-case in the 98 Jimmy so it works like a Typhoon.... That's annoying.
Would there be any more strain on the T-case if the front Diff was not lock in then?

I tried a 4wd case in my ty for a few seaons. didnt like it and went back to the ty case. remember the 4wd case has a different power bias front to rear.

That's what I've noticed about the 98 Jimmy Vs The Typhoon. I'll try and find a used Typhoon or Bravada T-case so the Jimmy acts better. I hate trying to turn that thing in 4wd mode. Feels like you'd break somthing will all the stress going on in the driveline.

I've seen some viscous couplers that can be put on the front driveshaft to make it act like an AWD application. Been awhile, and I'm not sure that it's any less work than putting a Sy/Ty/Bravade case in there. It would let you keep the switchable case though if thats important to you.

I'd rather have it be AWD realy at this point I think it'd be safer for the driver. It's kind of a

long sausage wagon and not sure if steering out of it kicking sideways would do much

good.. I'm sure she'd put it in a ditch after driving the Typhoon all the time.

Anyone got a good (cheap) Bravada T-case for sale?

I can understand those as very valid points. The GF doesn't get to drive my red truck except on sunny days where there is ZERO chance for rain, and she never gets to drive the Yukon unless the "Auto 4wd" is enabled.

She took the Yukon to pickup some other girls and cart them all to a wedding she was in. Was raining that day. She came back and said the Yukon was clunking when turning from a stoplight. I went and drove it....sure enough, the Auto 4wd was kicking in, and keeping her pointed in the right direction. No wonder she backed her camaro, and her S10 into a ditch in HS!!!
