Dropping differential for motor mount change

I've read in several posts about removing all but one of the mounting bolts for the front differential to drop it and allow easier access to the motor mounts. When you do this, do the front axles need to be disconnected from the differential too? If so, where are they disconnected?

The half shafts unbolt from the axles on the front diff. I imagine you can drop the differential a little bit with them still attached, but I wouldn't recommend it because they could bind up or limit the range of travel for the diff.

just pulled my diff last week. Yes you will have to unbolt the axles from the differential. once your almost out, i would probably just drop it all the way out anyway, then you will have all the room in the world to do the mount swap. You will have to bend the back pinion mount back to clear the frame/oil pan and bend it back when its back in. For the upper bolt i used a cheap box end 19mm and cut the other end off, it can sneak into the frame hole to hold the nut.

you don't have to take the diff all the way out to do the motor mounts..

hell i replaced one of them with everything in the truck.. but if you lower the front diff it makes life MUCH easier.

Agreed, also leave the front half shaft connected.
