Drive or Overdrive

Today when I ws cruising around town, I was cruising around in overdrive for a little while...But I noticed the truck would shift alot like anytime going uphills and what not. Should I just run around town in Drive all the time, and just use the Overdrive when i am on the highway? I know that's kind of a stupid question. But I figured I would ask just to see what you guys do. I would get a better launch launching it in Drive vs Overdrive as well right? Im sorry if these questions seem stupid, but I have never own an automatic.

Thanks guys

I personally only use drive in town and overdrive on the highway. I found that, like you said, overdrive in the city caused too much retarded downshifting. I'm pretty sure it's just an economy gear, I'd say drive is where the power's at. Hope this helps.

the lower the gear you launch in the higher the transmission line pressure. Be careful manually shifting a stock trans, though. May be easiest just to use D instead of 1 or 2. Have you checked your TV cable?

better to use drive than OD.... same as above... more line pressure...
As Far as when to use OD?? I usually let off the gas then shift into OD at around 60mph

It was stated before that a weak point in our trannies is something involved with the OD->D downshift. If you're somewhere where it wants to keep downshifting, it's best to just keep it in D. If it's staying in OD, you might as well leave it there.

Sounds good to me thanks for the info. Looks like it is D for me intown, and OD on the highway.... Try and keep the tranny as long as I can

Peter mentioned something about temps over 200 and getting out of it PERIOD if they ever got there as the reason his stocker stayed together.

Chances are that everybody gets a tranny at some point!
Well except those who mention in there ads "Never launched".
Really, what's a launch?
Oh you knew what one was... Just never did one...
RRRrrrrriiiiggghhhhtttt.

Anybody had there stocker last an inordinate amount of time due to some perceived behavioral pattern?

i always find myself driving around in D around town.... higher line pressure, plus the truck has a little more umph when that mustang pulls up beside you...

i shift it into OD at around 45mph when i know im going to be cruising at a speed where i can use 4th and get my shitty highway gas mileage... (need a tuneup)

theres also the argument at the track to have it in D or OD... personal choice... alot use D all the way, some start in D shift to OD through the traps.... some like me use OD and still got decent times.... i hit the rev/boost limiter one time down the track in D, truck lurched hard, never used it again since on the track...

I have 100K on a stock trans. I use D in town OD when cruising on the highway. As mentioned before - I generally shift into OD when I am going to be above 45 for any period of time.

My truck has been launched - not much over 5# of boost though.

Isn't the top of third mathmatically 106 mph?
I thought your truck was relatively stock?
That's a decent mph for a stocker...

I think Adam is running @ 100mph in the 1/4 but remember that is the avg of the last 60 feet so he needs to turn @ 105 at the end of the 1/4
