Do I need to adjust my shift points with an aggressive cam ( 422 or bigger ) ? ---

I have a custom cam a little more aggressive all around than a 422 cam.

I was thinking the power range will be 2500-6000 rpm.

I was told I may have to re-calibrate the springs in the transmission to adjust the shift points?

For some reason this seems like its going to be a pain in the ass to me.

Any of you guys running a stock transmission setup besides a stall ... and a 422 cam or a more aggressive cam?

How does it workout?

I guess it doesn't make sense to install a cam, and have it shift while its still making power, right?

Maybe I just need someone to explain to me what I need to do.

Im letting this one small thing almost talk me out of doing a heads/cam setup. (ported intakes, vortec heads, low 60mm turbo)

If I cant figure this out , maybe I will just go with one of the "proven" cams that like the stock shift points?

Maybe this is easier than I am making it seem in my head though.

Not sure I want to spin my stock bottom end much past the stock limits anyway ---

Mine was always off a bit,i just manually shift it when I'm doing wot

Whats the stock rev limiter at when you go that route?

Does it shift immediately? My old TH400 would take a second to shift when I had a "slapstick" shifter in it ---

You should adjust your shift points to make better use of your mods. It is not hard at all. Don't let it worry you. I bought a B&M shift re-calibration kit. I need to adjust mine again since changing to a bigger cam but it is not hard at all.

There is a great thread on the site about this but I didn't save the link. You will have to search for it. It give several combo's of springs and weights and the resulting shift points. Its good to get you in the ballpark of were you need to be. You just pull the governor make the changes. Test drive it and adjust some more until you are happy.

Its probably going to take several tries and to get were you want it. The lighter you go with weight and springs the higher the shift points go. That thread will be great to get you going.

AWESOME, thanks ... looks like I could get a 5600 RPM shift point which will be pretty close off the bat!!! ---

There is one thing I didn't see mentioned, that you might want to consider also. If you change the shift points for WOT using different weights and springs in the govenor, just realize, it changes the shift points for part throttle also.

That is something I didn't realize Brassmonkey.

How are the part throttle points adjusted? Is it pretty much give and take ... change a little here, and it will effect it there?

I guess that will be good because all the points should be a little higher with a radical cam. I don't want to have to rev it to redline in each gear though LOL.

Ideally you want to be ~110% of peak HP.

Ballpark based on syty's and what they need with bigger cams 5500-5800rpm will get you real close.
