Differential choices

Looking around at diff's and don't know how a locker (like a Detriot) would change performance versus the stock limited-slip.

Re: Differential choices

A locker has no clutches and the initial engaging is more direct compared to the slip diff. I think the locker type is better on rear wheeled vehicules but since you have AWD i dont think it would make a noticeable diference unless it's a very strong engine.

But in the same token, IF I found a rear-end with a locker already equipped it is not going to kill the rest of the driveline.

Re: Differential choices

If you want to put a locker in the 7.5 10 bolt that is in your truck you will have to swap the differential case. The Governor Lock that is in it now won't accept a locker kit, like the Lock Right or E-Z Locker. These kits only install in standard differential cases. Don't forget about the Eaton posi. Eaton makes them for the 7.5 in 26 and 28 spline versions. I like the Eaton much better than the Gov. Lock and the locker kits for street/strip use. If the little 7.5 has you worried that it might break then you can step up to a custom built 8.5 or 12 bolt. If you never drive your truck on the street then a spool might be a good choice, but it will require c clip eliminators.

Re: Differential choices

Here is what we are looking at:
A 2001 S10 4x4 truck 28 spline 7.6 rear axle with 3.73 ratio with a Detriot 162C-59A already installed. All I'm worried about is will it affect the rest of the drive line to have a locker on the rear. I do not have a Super Build engine and I ain't concerned with being the fastest/ quickest. Consistancy would be nice, that and reliability (laughing on the inside).

Re: Differential choices

What gears are in the front end? Factory gears (which I thought were 3.42's) or have you changed them to 3.73's already? Because if you are changing gear ratios, you've got to do BOTH ends (its not optional).

So, if this is a ratio change, you've got to plan on doing the front end of the truck also (which is an additional cost to consider).

I don't know that you'll have any major problems with the locker. It will click or pop (as it ratchets), and may make the inside tire "hop" in turns. And it may change your handling characteristics (it may "push" more than it used to). My personal preference is for a limited slip, like a Zexel Torsen or a Detroit True-Trac (their part number 912A557). But thats just my opinion.

Also, don't forget that you can get the 8.5" 10 bolt rear as a factory fit rear (correct widths, spring perches, everything). It was available in the S10 platform in any truck with the 4.3l V6 & 5 speed manual (be warned: 2wd, std 4x4, & ZR2 4x4 packages are all different widths, you'd want the std 4x4 width). I think that availability started in 95 or 96. It is certainly a more heavy duty rear than the 7.625" 10 bolt could ever hope to be. If you wanted to use the Detroit True-Trac on that rear it'd be Part # 913A481.

Re: Differential choices

The standard S series 4X4 front differential will swap into the Sy Ty by changing the right side axle and tube, and the companion flange for the prop shaft. That is all that is required. If you get the 3.73 rear then you should also get the front to match it.

Re: Differential choices

That's right, they are 3.42, crud. I guess I'll use it for the S/GT, that should get rid of the rear wheel spacers.
Thanks, guys. I do appriciate it.
