Difference between 9/11, 9.5", 10" Torque Converters??

I have a built transmission in my Typhoon. I am in the process of looking for a new torque converter. What is the difference between a 9", 9/11, 10" converter? I understand the locking and unlock feature but not what the size difference affects.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Stall, primarily.

A smaller diameter converter will generally stall higher, given the same vane pitch. A smaller diameter converter will generally produce less heat at a higher stall, also.

A 9/11 is a hybrid to get the stall potential of the 9", with the additional lockup clutch surface area of the larger converter.

Thanks for the explination. So what would be recommended for a built motor truck, running in the mid to low 11's maybe even high 10's, I drive this truck mostly around town, hardly on the highway? Transmission is also built.

Thanks,
Nick

I really like lockups for drivability if for nothing else.

I run a 3600 stall convertor that feels almost like stock due to lockup.

I would call Yank and see what they can offer you. I am happy with my yank convertor.

Theres a tranny shop down here about 45 min's away from me that claims they can build you any converter you want that will hold any power thrown at it. They also claim that the ones they build have a less % of loss. They build alot of stuff for high power 4x4's and drag cars. If I can find there card I'll post the info. They are in Deland Fla.

FYI, GM buys from Precision, ATS, and YANK.
Tell them you lock it up at WOT and see who will warranty it. :D

Alot of companies buy their parts from Dacco or PTS. The three above make most of their own covers, stators, and misc. in house.

here's what George had to say about WOT lock up

George Blake said:
If you do the 9.5" PI, like the ones I do, you better get a triple clutch or it will not hold up locking up at WOT.

The yank is a more streetable converter. Those are not recommended to be locked up at WOT. You HAVE to give them REAL numbers or you won't get what you wanted. You have to do some tweaking with the trans lockup arrangement and the stock ecm to get the 9/11 to behave.

I basically recommend a Yank for everyday driving. PI for those that MUST lock it up at WOT. I haven't had much luck with the 9/11 stuff so I just keep quiet on that one.

I've sold PI, Yank, and Coan. What I've learned is that you MUST know EXACTLY what your engine is doing. What exact RPM you make power at, how much torque, HP, etc. If you do NOT know, you need to find out. If you do a "guess", don't chew any manufacturers head off because it's not their fault. You get the numbers wrong and it won't behave right. Too tight, too loose, run hot, etc.

#1 thing. Don't kid yourself into thinking you'll get a big rediculous stall and compensate for it by locking it up early. Doesn't work that way. That's not just for you, that for others looking at this trying to get a converter set up right.

I don't necessary agree with WOT lockup as I've sheared 80e input shafts off with 2wd trucks, but for an all out race vehicle it's worth it.

I've locked my TCS 9/11" for years and it still holds strong. Do I expect it to forever? No.

Depends a lot on the power level, the gearing, and where your torque peaks are.

What stall and size of a converter you pick has a lot to do with the gears you're running, the torque you're making, your desired shift points, your cam, your heads, and how big of a turbo (and BB or not).

Most good converter shops will ask you for this information up front.

Good converters are quite expensive. $600-$900. (And up!)

Tell ya what there is a guy at Infineon who was running in the 11s and went to one of these converters and flat woke everybody up. Went into the 10s, had to get his cage certified, started pickin' the front. It was amazing the difference. Season is over so it'll be hard to get the details but this will, in all likelihood, be the converter I get.

I have a tcs 9 /11 which I bought here on a GP years ago, I think from Brain Harthman. I had it restall and rebuilt 2 months ago by Pro Tourque, they told me it was worn out real bad, cost $500 to get rebuild.
I got PTC 10" lock up for my 4l80e, cost 1k.

The 9/11 for the 700 is for sale if anyone interested . :)

Trim the ears off that case so it'll clear the floorboards.
The thing with the hole in it off of both sides if it's there and then just run your fingers straight down the edge of the bellhousing till you hit the extensions on both sides. Take a sawzall and go straight down that line and trim those off.

Thanks, I found that out the hard way yesterday. I didn't pull it all the way down, it was a pain to get it on the jack under the truck. I did a rought cut with sawzall right up in there.

BTW George, you were right about the stock trans tail housing are not all alike. I have two, on one the adapter plate wouldn't fit right and on the other it fit perfectly.

Yep. There are a few different ones out there.

George,

What do you mean by different? Is it the bolt pattern that is different? Is this found between the 2WD and 4WD trans or is it just random between years? What do you do if your adapter plate doesn't fit the trans you have?

thanks,

It's not the transmission, it's the adaptor. There are 3 different kinds. It's made for the syty/bravada adaptor.
