Differant Diameter Tires NO NO!!!

Found out the hard way that you cant do that. Blew out my front diff gears. No more teeth on the pinion gear and now my transfer case is prolly next in a few months. So those who noticed that my signature said Vette ZR-1 rims 275/315 the front tires were a 275/40/17 and the back were 315/35/17 and thats what ended the road for that ring and pinion. No i went back to my old C5 ZO6 rims with 275/40/17's on all for and man did it make a differance in driving. Feals like the truck woke up.

But at the shop i found out that i have no more rubber on my motor mounts and my motor is creating a groove in my 3Rd member cause the driver side of the motor hangs down an inch too low and the bracket that mounts the diff to the frame has three 5inch cracks in it. Monday its going to get the tranny rebuild and hopfully by then i can get this stuff fixed. And have a nicer Syclone.

Next up after that is body work and a paint job. Then the interior and this truck has basicly been rebuilt.

F: 275/40/17 and R: 315/35/17 .... :dunno: ....those are the same sizes that lots of SyTy'ers use w/o any problems.

:stupid: They are practically the same exact height.

SyTyless......for now!
Re: Differant Diameter Tires NO NO!!!

Interesting, I would have thought that the different tire sizes would have caused transfer case (specifically the VC) problems long before the front diff expierenced any damage.:2cents:

Yeah, I was also under the impression that those sizes were close enough. How long did you run this setup? I ran 265/33 and 295/35's for one weekend in KC and had no problems. That was WAYYYYYYY off in height. It was only fo ra weekend though. Sounds like a different problem.

Re: Differant Diameter Tires NO NO!!!

The mathematical difference between a 275/40 and 315/35 is 0.5mm. A half of millimeter is nothing.

As long as the outside circumference of the tires is the same the width isnt going to matter.

actually, what matters, it the effective radius measured from the center of the wheel to the ground. different air pressures could make more than .5mm difference.

Re: Differant Diameter Tires NO NO!!!

if .5mm is going to make a difference...then driving around in a circle for an extended period of time should tear it up too

Those are the specs off Tire Rack from the tires i had. Well its better new knowing that its not going to have problems down the road cause of that. I still have yet to pull off the rear diff. cover to check out the gears but that can wait cause i have a fealing i wont like what i see.
