Diff Cover....any ideas?

I installed a Summit differential cover on the Sy, and the bearing cap load studs stick way out (about 1-1/4" past the jam nut) even after being torqued. Anyone else run into this? Before installation you could run them all the way by hand, so it isn't the threads. My Xtreme basically has the same rearend and the load studs run almost flush with the jam nuts(1/8" past nut). Any ideas? I'm about to cut off the excess and leave it. Both rears are 3:42, both locking, both 7 5/8 ring gear.

Are you sure you torqued them in and not out? You might want to re check them again.

I'm sure, cause I ran them down as far as they would go by hand to see where they would contact the bearing caps, then I marked them and backed them out so I could apply some sealant on the threads to prevent seepage. After applying sealant I ran them back down and torqued them to 10 ft.lbs. Before installation the overall length of the studs was 3-4". I cant remember if that's how long they were on the other truck. I wonder if Summit made them longer so they would be more "universal".

Something is not right.

Take the cover off and see if you can locate why they are sticking out so far.

Whatever you do, don't cut the excess off.

If you cut the excess off you will never be able to re-torque the bolts.

You will need to replace the bolts if you ever decide to remove the cover and want to reinstall it.

And one more thing, isn't 10 ft. lbs. too much force on the bearing cap. I remember the two covers that I installed asking for 5 ft. lbs. or 60 in. lbs.

See ya,
