Deck height?

My brother is having his Typhoons motor rebuilt, and the mechanic is insisting on lower compression than stock. His heads are stock with a rebuild, 1.6 valves etc. His mechanic works on mostly naturely aspirated motors, and the concern is that he is going to lower the compression too much. My brother is or was running a comp cam and a Bad Dog Turbo. Any specs or links we could look at?

My personal opinion is quench is more important than the compression ratio, as long as you're still under 9:1 or so. I would ask for a .035 to .040 quench.

A lot of guys know more than I do in this area, so maybe they will chime in.

haven't been around long enough to understand some of the lingo, but that was what I needed to hear. I'll pass it along to my brother

Deck Height - CR

Deck Height - CR

Don't know why anyone would go to a Lower CR - that's less power. A little higher, I can see, as long as U don't have valve/piston clearance problems.

I was thinking of 8.5 to 9.0 for my rebuild. J & E seems to have some 8.5 extreme Duty SBC pistons which look like a good fit.

well once you determine the compression you want to run, you plug in all the variables to see what numbers you come up with. You will need to know deck height, rod length, piston cc's, and chamber size in the heads. You will probably want to clean deck the block, and might need some custom pistons if you want lower compression. 8.5:1 is the standard with readily available off the shelf parts.

I dont how much lower compression your brother was planning on running, but 8.5:1 seems to be a happy medium. Lower compression with more boost, will end up giving you more power then higher compression less boost. There are lots of other variable like fuel used, etc. but typically this is true. But too low of compression will result in slower spool up, etc. so you dont want to get too carried away and do like 7.5:1.
