Datamaster Boost/Spark Retard Question

After reviewing the datalogs I noticed that whenever there is an increase in boost, the spark retard goes up. I have the Kock Alert open as well and it increases than goes right down. I can maintain boost with no SR or KA but they both increase only at the beginning. Below are the numbers based on peak boosts.

17.1 psi boost = 5.8 Spark Retard
18.7 psi boost = 3.5 Spark Retard
15.5 psi boost = 12.7 Spark Retard
15.5 psi boost = 5.6 Spark Retard
20.0 psi boost = 6.5 Spark Retard

The boost seems very high! I thought max was 14.5-15? Where should the SR be?

Anyone want to review my logs and give me their opinion please let me know. Thanks, Jason

PS - My truck is pretty much stock. Listed below are the mods I did...
-KN air filter in the stock box with the crossover plastic pipe coming from the engine.
-Magnaflow Cat and Muffler (3").
-MSD Distributor
-MSD Plugs
-ACD Plugs gapped per stock spec
-IAC
-TPS
-Starter
-Traced all the Vac lines and there were previously hacked up. Connections all over the place, etc. I believe I have a leak behind the dash because when I accelerate hard and the turbo spools, I hear a gush of air coming from behind the dash, like it is coming through the defrost vents. No hiss or noise when the turbo is not spooling, only when I have boost.

Idles ok but I noticed a few things...
-on cold start in the morning it cranks right up but every so often I hear a "Pisst" coming from the engine. Sounds like someone is purging NOX. Goes away once the truck warms up.

Also, if I put it into Neutral, it rev's higher and smooths out a little. When at a stop, it idles ok but every so often I feel a skip, like a murmmer or something. Not really a misfire but like a slight hesitation.

With all this, I decided the next best thing to get her running better was Datamaster. I did not want to throw money at guessing what was wrong and everyone I talked to said it is well worth the money. Based on the fact I bought the truck and it was stumbling, could not even drive it back and forth to work (about 35 miles) and now I drive it every day to work, I have hope. Just need a little help interpruting the data.

I was scared to go WOT because of the Vac leak. I wanted to run Datamaster first to see if there was anything gleaming STOP. If not, then I would run it WOT. I have read the Datamaster manual and on line posts about what to look for but figured someone else couldhelp me "cheat" and be able to give me a quick overview of what you saw.

I'm new as well to datamaster so I wont be much help but just make sure you read tookys site powertuneplus.com. Also maybe check timing.

Re: Datamaster Boost/Spark Retard Question

I am no help but you don't want any Spark Retard at all...

A 40 minute drive may get you 3-4 >.>

I have a vac leak and it doesn't cause Spark Retard even at WOT...
(waiting for more vac kits to become available)

My truck is almost stock just: 20g turbo, 2600 stall TC, walbro fuel pump, stock chip.

I have read a lot of these trucks are picky when it comes to the gap of the spark plugs... most of these things seems to be trail and error >.>
(I have seen gaps from .28-.35)

Someone should be able to give you more specific ideas to troubleshoot.

If all else fails just redo:
-Distributor
-Plugs
-Wires

Try Taylor wires someone here has an upgrade kit with it all >.>

Re: Datamaster Boost/Spark Retard Question

all those boost levels are to high for a stock map truck, that mag cat and muffler might be causing overboost.

Hey Jason, did you pull the wastegate rod off to make sure the wastegate isn't rusted shut like I suggested?

Mine will stick every few months I need to take it off and spray it.

Re: Datamaster Boost/Spark Retard Question

I was able to get plyers onto the rod and it did move in and out. It felt very tight and was not easy to move, but it did move in and out. I was going to remove the wheel, etc. to get better access but with the snow and cold I was unable to do so. How easy or hard should it feel to move the rod in and out?
