Cooling woes

Ok, heres the deal....replaced my heater core over the weekend, install went great -- except one thing.

I feel as though coolant is not circulating 100% through my engine. Refilled with 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled H2O, with a bottle of Water Wetter. Refilled with engine running. Rev the engine, the coolant level at the filler, drops -- telling me the water pump is working. There is coolant travelling through the Heater Core, so thats not the problem.

The temp guage rises normally, not incredibly fast (from not getting any coolant) and stop at 195 deg.

You should be able to hear the thermostat release, allowing coolant flow. Flow should drop briefly, visually telling you that its in open loop. I didnt hear it..so I replaced the thermostat (195 deg).

New thermostat and no change. I still feel like the truck is running in closed loop.

Any thoughts?

Not sure what you mean about closed loop. If you mean the thermostat isn't opening you will know it because the truck will run hot. If it is running at 195 then the thermostat is doing its job.

Agreed.. You wont "hear" the t stat open either. If the truck is running ~195 with a 195 stat Id say your cooling system is working.

At idle with and the engine cold (t stat shut) you wont really see much if any coolant flow through the rad cap opening. Revving the eng slightly the leve might drop slightly but thats it.

With the engine at operation temp the coolant level will drop quite a bit if you bring the RPM up some. Also while you have the RPM up while hot look down in the rad cap opening and see if you can see coolant returning into the tank from the heater core. You should have a pretty good flow coming out there. Be careful and move your face away from the rad opening before letting the engine idle down as you may very well get a face full of 195 deg coolant(BTDT... ouch).

Oh, almost forgot.. You didnt just replace the water pump did ya? A non reverse rotation pump will cut the coolant flow volume down in a big way as the engine is turning the pump backwards. Just FYI.

Myclone,

yup...replaced water pump with new GM unit. Hmm..there isnt much on this typhoon i have yet to replace. :drinking:

As long as you got one for a serpintine(sp?) belt application then you should good to go on the water pump.
