Converter Recommendations?

I'm rebuilding the trans in my Syclone and figure a better converter would be a logical upgrade. The truck is pretty much stock but it does get treated to a little quarter mile action and I find it difficult to hold the stock converter and keep boost in stage.

I'm looking for a converter that can give me a bit more edge, but something that will still work well on the street. Recommendations for stall speed and preferred manufacturer please?

I currently run a TCS 9/11 with no issues, I have a larger turbo so my stall is higher than your application would need. 2300-2600 would be about right

Turbo? Pretty much stock you said, what isn't stock?

Re: Converter Recommendations?

I've recommended these folks before. I have one, works great. Truck is raced virtually every week. 2800 stall works good on the street, for me anyway. Might be a little fast for some.

Shaun,

As already asked, what is your turbo? If you are breaking away at the line, why not upgrade your brakes? Are they stock? Correct me if I am wrong but the idea is to leave the line with max torque possible before traction gets lost.

Having a soft stall may mean you spool higher on the line but it will be the same breakaway torque as determined by the brakes and by having a higher top end, you're limited on rpm with a stock truck and you'll just reach the rev limiter and have a narrower power band.

If you're planning on upgrading the turbo later on then of course, grab a slightly higher stall. I have 2800 in mine from TCI (billet - looks beautiful!) but with my GT35R, I think it might be a bit high. 2600 seems right but it all depends.

If you have a stock turbo then keep the stock converter. :2cents:

Re: Converter Recommendations?

Thanks guys, I'm running the stock turbo - the only upgrades I have are a Pitbull ATR chip and Walboro pump.

My understanding is that if I have a higher stall I can load more revs on the truck in stage before it wants to creep its way out of the beams. By upgrading the brakes all I'm doing is loading more strain on the transmission (correct me if I'm wrong in this, all my previous quarter mile rides have been stick shifts).

I'm not averse to upgrading the brakes, but years of running sixties muscle cars mean that I'm used to long braking distances :D

A higher stall converter will be less load on your transmission
but will raise your boost of the line and then locks up after you
release your brakes for a great launch when i installed my 3000 stall
9/11 converter on a stock turbo set up i gained nearly a 1/2 second e.t
this was impressive for just a converter swap !!!

2400-2600 stall is what I would run on a stock turbo. Anything more, mileage will drop. Mileage will drop regardless, but you get the idea.

If mileage is not a concern, 2800 max stall. The stock engine & turbo does not need anymore IMO. It really just needs 2400-2600 if your engine is all stock. If you can get it to hook w/a 2800 stall, that will most likely give you the better ET.

I have a bigger turbo than stock & I believe I need 2600 stall, don't want to have it any looser than I need.

I data logged my stock converter & it will brake stall to 3025 RPM @ 19 PSI of boost. I would like it to come up a bit faster than it curently does.

Thanks guys, that's exactly what I'm after - a bit of an upgrade rather than going all out for e.t. The truck is very much a driver for all occassions, I've got a 68 Camaro with a 503hp small block for when I'm not bothered about gas mileage :D

My sixty foot times at the track were really poor (2.2s) so I just wanted to get it launching in boost better (admittedly there could be a bit more to come with driver experience). Cheers for the advice, as ever it's much appreciated!
