Compression, Boost, and Pump Gas

Hello Everyone. I'm getting ready to turbo a 2000 S-10. I am wondering what pressure I can get away with running. I plan on 8.1:1 with a common pin crank, Crower rods, CompCam, DFI, looking into Alum. heads. And do it all running on pump gas. I realize there will be much work to the cooling system. As well as the trans. not holding up(I broke it twice already). I have an 8.5" 10 bolt, some think it will hold some don't. We'll see? Anyhow, does anyone know how much boost I could see without needing jet fuel?

What is very little? 15? 20? You guy's run something like 13PSI on 8.3:1 stock. Right? If that is right would it be in the ball park it go for 20PSI with a good A/A IC, good engine mangement, and some dyno time?

What are your goals?

On 8.5:1 CR with decent heads, good turbo & IC, you could run 15-16psi easily.

For an oddfire motor, DFI will have to use a locked out distributor, FAST system can control it with a special oddfire firmware.

Unless you are looking for more than 650hp, and gonna spin to high hell, I'd stick with evenfire.

I plan abusing this thing everyday. That's why I'm overbuilding. And I'm getting the crank for less than $500. The I/C was $75, $50 for a complete engine from a 94 Caprice, I got a guy gonna put on splayed mains for cheap, why not build a monster?
I thought DFI was distributorless. If not I'll go back to my Electromotive plan. Or maybe AEM, but I haven't heard anything about them. Anyway it's very good to hear that my plan of starting at 15PSI and working to 20PSI is close to being on target. I'm hoping to see around 500HP at the wheels when alls said and done. And hopefully get my paint sponcered. Anywho, thanks for the reply.

I still wouldn't go oddfire. PITA, and you can get 500 to the wheels with a well built stock block & crank 4.3. McCoy has beat the living snot out of a stock block & crank setup on his 9 sec Sy. Gotta be upwards of 700hp. The crank will be cheap for the oddfire, but you are looking at big bucks for the rest of the setup for oddfire. A stock cast crank will meet your goals pretty easily. I made ~550-600hp on the stock block & crank, and so have several others at this point.

AEM is nice looking, but setting it up for a custom app would be a nightmare, and I don't mean by just the wiring. You must layout a *lot* of tables and constants.

DFIv7 looks nice, but I've only heard of a couple people running it, and several with problems. Many have used FAST with Syty's, so I'd use that until the DFI is proven.

ok, lets get this strait.....you said on "pump gas". Do you really think that you can safely run 20 psi on 91 octane pump gas?????? keep dreamin'......

that is the question. What can I run? I talked to the DYNO guy yesterday he was talking 13-14PSI. I think he knows what he's talking about but since he see's mostly blown stangs he may not be including a I/C into the deal? So agian what is a safe boost to start at with 8.1:1 on pump gas?

With that compression, I'd say 16-18psi is possible. That's taking into account aluminum heads, and assuming you will have a relatively large turbo & good intercooler.

If you are shooting for your goal of HP on pump gas, you'll need to do either of 2 things:
1- build the hell outta the motor (heads that flow 300cfm, high lift cam, huge turbo)

2- run more boost with alky/water injection

I've been giving some thought to splayed valve heads (now thats some money). And a alky sprayer is not a big problem. Right now I'm just trying to setup a workable plan. I'd rather not end up buying things twice cause nothing works together. And so far I've found no local source of knowledge. Everyone I've found said "why not just drop in a 350?".
