Cold air kit vs. open cone filter?

Would a cold air kit give better air flow,or could I just put a K&n in place of my air box,what size filter and hardware do I need to put on just the exposed filter? Ive seen both, which is better ?

i've used a kb cool air kit (no battery relocation) and did not find any difference in performance except a whooshing sound when getting
off boost. a cone filter at the end of the stock tube could pass more air
but it still has to go thru the stock setup. also it would pick up hot/warm underhood air. a kn filter in the stock airbox works fine for me.
