Clutch clearance warning.

Just a consumer warning.
I'm in the process of trying to get selective backing plates for different clutch stacks in the transmission for some people. I go to Transtar and Dacco since so many local transmission shops use them all the time so I could get the selective backing plates really quick.
Get this. Both sales reps from both places tell me the same thing:
"You are the only one we ever have requesting these items. Shops rarely ever call for items like this. It'll take us a couple days to get them."

You know what that means? Shops aren't setting proper clutch clearances when they build them(at least in this area). Rarely do you make it through a rebuild and not have to work at least one of the stackups to get it just right. Next time you get a good deal, keep this in mind to ask the guy building it. Looks like they are just stacking them in out of the kits and popping in retaining rings. No wonder so many are failing after such a short time.
FYI,
George

This is the one week warranty, right ?
When i rebuilted my trannies i didnt had the luxury to buy the right backing plates (not available here) so i installed steels in different thikness. Worked great

Nothing wrong with doing that if that's what they were actually doing.

and something else brother,
The steel plates werent flat...i mean there was different thickness across the plate
Thats what the guys said at the shop with the magnetic milling machine, and it is important IMO

That is very important and contributes to hotspotting if not corrected.
What some guys do when doing custom stackups is start with a .106" plate(they cost about $2.50 each) and machine them down to whatever thickness they need. Unfortunately, everyone doesn't have the luxury of having a mill that can do this. Sounds like your guys can though. Backing plates act as a steel and can be machined as well if clearances allow it.
GM has a lot of good parts coming out just for this sort of thing now and would be a lot easier to deal with.
I've had the thin alto's with kolene coating actually wear off at the high spots revealing irregularities in the steel.
ALTO,GM, and Raybestos all manufacture steels. Only GM produces new backing plates though.

thats how I set my 3-4 clearances. I have the 1 piece apply milled down to the specs that each input drum calls for.

When i did my first tranny ,i applied a little hand pressure on the cluches and i could spin them arround.
With the second tranny, that is down under the bench, i couldnt do this even with minimun force ...so i marked this in my mind....to get thicker plates and get some milling to them
I also notices the hot spots you say
My tranny is kinda tired in the 2-3 shifts and i think i will see how the second one works soon

Let us know if you need any help. Open up the clutch stack clearances to help prevent any parasitic drag which will help cut down on hot spotting as well. GM is also using turbulator steels in certain clutch stacks to prevent parasitic drag. One is the low clutch stack(way down in the bottom of the case) and the other is in the reverse input drum(the drum the 2-4 band rides on). When these assemblies are spinning but not engaged, the fluid slings from the inner circumference to outer circumference and "piles up" toward the outer edge which can cause the clutches to drag slightly(AKA centrifugal apply). The turbulator steels have 4 holes in them of specific size and location to eliminate this drag.

Probuilt-automatic sells them as seen above.
If you can get them from GM use:
GM # for the low/reverse .068" thick:
24205268
You need 5 of them

GM# for the reverse input .078" thick:
24205267
You need 3 or 4 of them

These are the exact same thickness as the stock steels that are already in there

OK,
I did finish the tranny with all the clearanses perfect. No rush , it was the second tranny (also 3000$ for parts)so i had all the time needed to do what i wanted. I think i will sell it cause i have to go with a 4l80 though, like Ryan did.

Blake , you were right its less than that in parts but it was more than 3000 till i get it in my hands(customs/air freight etc)
well here it is:
17576 super rebuilt kit (colene st/7 cluches) 261$
17255 2/4 band hi po red liner 29$
17002 alu billet super servo (very big) 129$
17595 sprag assembly 159$
10700 alu pan /deep/ 151$
17708 10 vane pump complete aprx 100$
17001 sift kit 93$
17710 super sun shell (sleeved) 144$
17715 super input drum (sleeved) w/piston 139$
???????? 9/11 TQ 900$
??????? HD output shaft aprx 200$ thats 2305$ total
now if you add 150$ for the core

God love ya. I forgot you were over in Greece. That proabably increases the cost of anything American you work on or make you get creative with machining.
