CHEAP! Fuel system mods..........

Cool deal Bill, mostly everyone has been buying the walboro upgrade.... does the current draw go up any? I'm sure you have to increase the fuse size from 10 to 15... the factory sy/ty pump was carrying the same number as the CPI 4.3's (in the carter catalog) and the cpi 4.3's run right at 56 psi, w/ no vacuum on the fpr, and draw about 7.6 amps, well at least some of the one's I have checked do...

Well thats all good and fine.

I don't mean to flame you but...

It would be a pretty big waste of time to drop your tank or remove the box just to shim up the current 10+ year old pump to get this gain. I highly doubt that a new syty pump is any cheaper than a walboro 340M these days either. Even if it was I'd still advise on the walboro anyway.

This may have been a great thing back before the walboro became available, but not anymore.

Again, I don't want to start some sort of flame war, we have enough of those already

The shim deal works.

Yes, its a waste to pull the tank to do this with a stock pump, but if you upgrade, it opens the door for higher pressure.

WHat I have done is buy the walbro GS307 and shim it just like above.

The 307 is always cheaper than the 340, and once it is shimmed, it is just as good for our purposes. The 307 bypasses fuel to the tank at like 60lbs and the 340 is good to @ 70, shim it, and you get the same performance out of the 307 and save 20 buck or so.

What the start to this thread refers to is shimming the walbro pumps.

Grand Nationals and SyTy's use the same pump. I am using all many of the parts I had set aside for my GN on my TY...FP, Regulator, 50#ers, Wastegate, etc, etc.

I bought a GS307 in the box with th reciept for $50 from a guy who was upgrading to the 340, because he read that it was way better in a post on the Buick board.

The shim deal may "work" but I sincerely hope I can discourage folks from going this route. Upping the pressure of the pump does not necessarily translate to higher flow numbers. If you need the elevated pressure, get a pump designed to flow at those pressures, like the Walbro High pressure unit that Ron Gregory sells.
If a tank is dropped in SyTy land, I really hope a stock replacement pump is not installed, shimmed or not...

The irrigation pumps that i deal with everyday, when you increase the pressure the flow rates drop off quite a bit.Maybe it is different with small electric fuel pumps.

It's fluiddynamics... Increase in pressure = decrease in velocity through a straight narrow area.... ;)

Personally it's not something I would do... but what ever floats your boat.. :)

So, if you are running a stock fuel pump and it is good up to 55psi, and you have a base fuel setting of 46lbs and you run 21psi of boost should the injectors be seeing 67lbs of fuel pressure? If thats right the stock pump is not putting out enuff pressure, right?

What did our trucks come from the factory, fuel pressure setting? and they were 14.5 psi of boost stock, so the stock pump if it relieves at 55 was barley adequate, this is why a fuel pump mod is a must i see. I would have thought the stock pump went higher than 55 stock, but oh well.

No reason not to shim the stock pump if you have a low mileage truck....
Bill Anderson

Bill,
Are you saying you flowed a shimmed SyTy pump? If so, what were the numbers? Please list method of test and associated parameters.

Again, if someone goes thru the hassle of lifting the bed and removing the pump why mess around with some backyard mod on a marginal pump? Shimming a 10 year old pump, regardless of mileage is MORONIC IMHO,.... For 100 bucks, get a new pump that WILL definately flow at elevated pressures.

You posted a interesting "trick" but beware. Opinions abound here, and yours is just one of many. Getting pissy when someone challenges your ideas is something someone who is in the retail business should steer clear of.

I am not selling anything and dont use this topic area to advertise my products. I just want to prevent needless heartache for folks I consider friends.

Sorry Mark... In an effort to split this quickly degenerating topic out of this area and into the lounge, I somehow moved your link for APE there too. For others:
The direction this topic was going fits the lounge better than here. If you have any other cheap fuel system mod Ideas, post away here.
Thanks,

You know what I think would be useful, is a cheap fix for our fuel slosh problems during hard launches.
