Changing my combo?

Well I havn't been on the "SyTy List" in 3 or 4 years so I don't recongize most of you.

Here's what I've got. Stock block, crank, eagle rods, .030 TRW, crower cam, crane lifters, pushrods, roller rockers, ported L35 heads w/ 2.02 and 1.60 valves. It has the stock upper and lower intake that's ported and stock TB. I have KB headers, T-72 turbo w/ .96 A/R exhaust housing, spearco air-air intercooler (core is 24" x 13" x 3" not including tanks) electric fans, 3" intercooler piping, 3" DP with race muffler and turn-down, 70# injectors, and 2 255 l/hr pumps. Also an MSD 6AL and coil. The tranny has a lot of parts from Brian Hartman and a 9/11 converter. I'm running the stock computer with an APEXI AFC.

I've only made 2 passes on the motor, best is 11.99 and about 117 MPH. The converter doesn't have enough stall for that big exhaust housing so my 60' time is 2.0 seconds and the 330' is about the same as my 12.8X stock turbo times. My ET would have been about 11.65 with a good 60'. That was running 19 lbs of boost on 110 race gas.

I know my heads suck. They only flow 176 CFM. I'm thinking of changing to Vortec heads but I'd like to know if the valves from my L35's will work with them. The other thing is the cam, it's a Crower "turbo special" camshaft and I think it's junk. 220 int 210 exh at .050 .476 lift int .452 exh, it's like an NA cam. What cam did you use BG?

I also have ceramic ball bearing T-76 to use next year. I'd like to run 25 lbs. My friend that owns a tranny shop suggested I go with a 3500 stall non-LU converter....?

Any suggestions? thanks

Well I'd definitely resize the exhaust housing.

As far as the rest, how nuts do you want to go? Given you have some tuning & chipping skills, you can work around not following a combination, as long as what you have can make power. I believe your heads & cam can make power. Would I choose different ? Yes.

If you are set on doing heads, do Vortecs. You can do cheap valves, and get away with no porting & a good valve job... that setup will make excellent power.

Cam- I like the milder Comp Cams, like Waller has used, like Tony has in his motor. 206-210 duration, ~.500" lift.

If you want to change as little as possible.. just do the exhaust housing. You may not need a converter restall at that point. If you are going to use the 76... forget what I said about the exhaust housing.

I think you are making good power so far, and you just need a smaller exhaust housing for more low end response. An 11.6 with 117mph, running 19psi ain't bad at all.

I am becoming less and less a fan of huge changes, gigantic projects...
<GASP... did I JUST SAY THAT??>

Ok, now back to researching my GM motor & trans swap into my Jeep :roll: Do I ever learn?

Looks like you have a 10 second combo. I'd bet with the smaller a/r and a lean bottom end with VP and some boost it'd run 10's. I've got a mild build compared to your and ran an 11.3 last weekend. My converters way too tight for my truck (starts stalling at 2100) but I worked around it the best I could, leaned out 1st gear to 12.9-1, installed the bigger rear brake cylinders and held on.

I would NOT suggest if going to a new TC, going NON lockup if you do ANY freeway driving. I have an Art Carr 9" nl that I'm going to replace with a lockup....... it's rated at 3200 stall, but on my truck it's actually 4000. I love it for around town and the strip, but any inclines such as large hills or mountain passes and I have to get it above 4K to stop the slippage and get over the hill, then I'm well into boost and flying low! (Motor has Vortecs, Comp. 422 cam, TE63 with 4 bolt .85 th, etc) On my truck, it spools in a heartbeat!

If your a throw 'em in and try 'em out type, your welcome to try it if ya cover postage from Seattle. It would at least give ya an idea if ya like a loose converter, and how your combo works. Afterwards, "if" you like it, order something with a lockup for that freeway driving :) and return mine.
