Re: Can a bad front diff tear up CV's?
Damn guys, I just replaced the half shaft again this morning, drove not even 100 miles and me and the wife were coasting up the highway at 70 in the left lane when all of a sudden there was a loud bang and the truck jerked HARD to the right, had another car been there, I wouldnt be hee right now. I slammed on the brakes and almost hit the guard rail, I couldnt turn the wheel. So I get in the shoulder and get her straightened out and just hear this clanking sound. I pull over and get out, find pieces of something scattered everywhere, ball bearings, and some other crap. I go to pick this piece of metal up and its scorching hot and burned the hell out of my finger. So I was luckily able to limp the truck home got it up and stands and the CV shaft is totally split in two. Not even 100 miles!! Those who know what entails installing one should know that there isnt much to screw up, so I know it cant be me. Is it really possible these shafts are that crappy? I put my hand on the axle and turned it and there is about 1/2" of play there from side to side, could it indeed be the front diff doing this? Depending on the response I get here, I am going to demand Pep boys do SOMETHING about this, this is not a good thing. Couldve killed me.
