Broken range selector shaft

NHSTE - I'm the only one!
Tonight was going to take the range selector off my old trans to cut and weld for the gilbert and then swap onto the truck. Problem is, when I put a little torque on the bolt (it was a little stiff with rust) it snapped the range selector shaft itself clean off. Fortunately this is on the old trans, but I'd like to know how difficult it is to change that because the trans is freshly rebuilt, just has the wrong servos in it for a syty

Re: Broken range selector shaft

well if you remove the pan, youll see that its not to terribly dificult, probably take an hour or so. There is a nut on the inside that attaches the "gear" to the inside just remove th nut and gear and whats left of the shaft should slide right out of the case, and id also get a new slector shaft seal when you install the new shaft in reverse order.

Re: Broken range selector shaft

I think it's a 5/8" nut on the inside to break loose. You'll also need a 1.5" wide file. What happens is right beside the rooster comb on the side opposite the nut, the manual shaft(that's the name for the part that broke) "mushrooms" out. Once you get the nut backed off and you slide the shaft over a little, it will get too tight to push out. Don't hammer or pry it out or you will enlarge the hole in the case and make a loose fit on the new shaft. Take a minute or two and rotate the manual shaft and keep the file flat on the shaft and work you way around the shaft until you can push it out by hand. Use a small prybar 1/2" or a pair of channel locks and pull the old metal clad seal out. Use a socket and hammer the new seal in and put some vasoline on the rubber part. The other shaft will slide back in easily. If your salvaging the shaft out of another trans, take your time and remove it the same way you did the broken one. If your good shaft has the nut rusted to it, heat it up with a propane torch and then spray PB blast on it and let it sit a minute and it'll come right off.
