Bowling Green SUCKS?????

Ok, for those that actually came to nats does anybody think BG sucks and isn't the place to be?

A few things we can improve on for sure yes, I want to hear if anybody thinks it just plain sucked and should never return to BG and the reasons why.

Re: Bowling Green SUCKS?????

I think it was fine. Could have been better. A little more organized, but Renz and the others did a great job for what they had to work with. Definitely need a different hotel. Holiday inn across the street looked like it had a nice size lot. Museum tour was a little drawn out but was fine. Hotel prices were great. People and turnout were great. Could have ordered better weather (cooler) :) Other than that. it was nice. I would like it to be there again. Maybe the holiday inn will let us use the convention room for the awards presentation next time :)

Just my thought.

Re: Bowling Green SUCKS?????

The HEAT sucked...BG did not. According to our southern friends, this was the hottest weekend of the summer so far.

I was surprised how industrial/built the town was...I guess I'm naive...but I pictured all of Kentucky like horse country...it's not. A hotel "off the beaten path" might be nice in the future...if there is such a thing. All in all though, we were isolated from "main street" when back at the hotel, so it was fine.

I didn't go but maybe next time try it near renz neighborhood that way everybody has something to compare it to. See where the best location would be then. Just my 2 cents.

I thought BG was great. The only mild complaint I could think of was the one thing totally out of anyone's control........ the Heat. Other then that it was a great time. I would definitely go to the next nats if its at BG again.

The heat is funny, weekend before was good, this weekend mid/low 80's.

go figure.

Track prep sucked also and that is never the case at BG.

That was the first day in the last 45 we had in the 90's!!! Although that is typical KY August heat.

I think the hotel itself was excellent, however the parking lot was no Doubletree......Overall the local of Nats was the best ever IMO. And, I'm not just saying that based on my sub 2-hr drive there!

Re: Bowling Green SUCKS?????

I would have thought track prep woulda been better.

The rest of the facilities were fine. The AutoX area looked fantastic.

Heat, whatcha gonna do? In hindsight, the June date might have been a better pick.

Maybe we could get an early season gig?

Bowling Green is fine. Is there a 1/4 mile track in the Nashville area? It wouldn't be a bad area either.

I suspect folks might like to see it move west for a year. I don't think it would be a bad idea to do east-central (Bowling Green), west-central (ALBUQUERQUE? Denver?). Folks in these areas would have to commit to stepping up for organizing, if the locations are to move.

Ultimately, the numbers will dwindle if we repeat in the same place.

Bowling Green was a fun. If your looking for feedback perhaps the following helps:
"THINGS TO LOVE":
1) Seeing the old timers, Jim, Aaron/Father, Dig, Frank, Dave, etc (who fly under the radar)
2) Covered Bleachers at the track (man it gets hot/humid in Ky)
3) Awards, Gifts, T-Shirts, misc (everyone was treated to something). Wished for Nats Hat,
tho GMC hats were available.
4) Lots of events (autocross, drag racing, corvette museum, shine-n-show, tech session)
5) Place to wash truck
6) Activities for kids (coloring, pool, etc)

"THINGS THAT MIGHT BE TWEAKED"
1) Designated Parking of trailers, trucks, rental vehicles to avoid Hotel dispute
2) Tent-like facility with seating to serve outside food (and announce agenda/items)
3) PA System during giveaways/raffle, etc
4) Speed-up raffle a bit (by announcing numbers 1-20, 20-40, 40-80, 80-100)
can pick up their small token gifts on tables 1, 2, 3, 4 (leaving the bigger
items more focus)
5) Coordinated announcement of drag racing/trucks (hard to figure out what was
happening later in the day)
6) Friendly "roving" camera/video recording (for nightly playback of day's events/people)
7) A central "spot" for swapping/sale of items by participants
8) Dunno about racing in front of one's hotel at night with foot traffic, cops, security,
and alchol (but no one got hurt). Kinda felt like being sent to the principal though.
9) It was not always obvious where registration (early, late) was to occur,
nor did every packet contain info on buffet (but this is pretty nickpicky)
10) Dunno if the "king" crown is rotational each year (like the famous Klak Chicken)
but its nice to see a trophy or such with engraved names passed on from year to year.
11) Until the awards/raffle, it was hard to know the "outcome" of events such
as music/audio winner, autocross winner, drag racing winner, people's award winner
and putting a face/truck/owner to that event was hard.

Hats off to the plannng committee and the many people who contributed.
It was a very good event. The weather was brutally hot/humid (but no rain/hail/wind).
Probably hard to do, but having a "storage room" at the hotel may be useful
(as well as a posting area, for "room members" having parties-extended activities).
Im certainly not complaining about any of the services, activities, or anything.
And I realize its a hard event to coordinate (due to the diversity of its members).

Re: Bowling Green SUCKS?????

BG rocked. The parking lot was kinda small, but I almost sorta liked that due to I didnt have to mosey around as far to go say hi to everyone. Restaurants a plenty, gas stations, and other misc things were a short drive. The track was a whole bunch closer than I thought it was going to be.

The track itself rocked out...covered bleachers, huge pit area for doing some testing, we pretty much took over the oval track for autoX, and the food was actually pretty good and clean bathrooms.

PA system would have definatley helped out alot at the hotel and during awards. I was supposed to be doing more announcing at the track, but was busy trying to dominate the AutoX and get some tuning done on my truck...couldnt be in 2 places at once.

The heat...well, it seems a trend that all the events fall on the hottest weekend of the location we are at. Didnt stop us from having fun though did it?

I read that 3 times, and it still doesnt make any sense to me

I know there are at least a few of us who would like to see it move a bit Westward.... :D

It was discussed that IF there is a Nationals next year, it should be a Western thing... perhaps Reno :hint hint:, otherwise it will most likely be a biennial event. So hopefully some people on the western side of things would like to try it?

I dont think any of the packets contained the info for the Buffet. Not sure why that was.

The crown actually had a big "11" cut out of it, so I dont think that crown will get passed around like the stanley cup, but a new one will have to get created every year.

Nobody would know the outcome of those events until the awards ceremony, there really is no other way for anyone to know. Everyone votes by the cards given to them in their packets, they are counted up shortly before the ceremony and announced at that time.

As for drag racing or auto cross, anyone who watches the races closely can figure out the winners before they leave the track.

Putting names to faces to trucks is always difficult, especially when cramming 60+ faces into 3 days, the only reason I knew a lot of people there was because I have been to 6 of the last 7 Nats, so over time you eventually start to remember

This year their were a lot of new faces and a lot of owners. I think I ended up not meeting about 20% of the people who attended.

Re: Bowling Green SUCKS?????

Only a couple small things I found issues with and none worth complaining openly about.

The directions to the buffet were an afterthought and were not produced when the rest of the packets were printed and collated.

There was a stack of directions left at the track and people walking around handing them out.

I did miss the "white board" that we used in KC to notify any stragglers of the event eschedule, where everyone had gone, when registration would re-open etc.

This year was almost an entirely new group of planners so some of the old lessons that had been learned had to be relearned.

I certainly hope this doesn't discourage Renz from taking it all on again.
He did a bang up job keeping the committee focused and the event running smoothly.
Renz = planner 4 life!

Some simple editing of the instructions rather just copying/pasting them from mapquest would be nice. Not all of us know which way North/South/etc is.

No one local stepped up to offer specific instructions as we had in years past.

TJ literally had to take what mapquest or google maps gave him and run with it.
We had no way to know those were good or bad until we got there.

For the record I threw mine away and stuck with GPS for navigation. ;)

actually, the directions to Ryans were the only ones I was able to follow relatively well :rotf: maybe I was just getting more familiar with the roads, i dunno. All i know is that next time, I'm taking I-65 to and from every event

Re: Bowling Green SUCKS?????

I thought the location was great. The hotel was very, very accomidating. How many places could you have complaints from the other guests and the cops called for some diesel trucks racing behind the lot, and still not get thrown out or have some consequences. The parking lot was not too small. If it werent for a half dozen or so trailers and tow vehicles in the lot there would have been more spots for sytys. It was mentioned on here when we were told about the hotel that they had a separate lot for trailers and non-syty vehicles, and brought up again at the meet. It wasnt a far walk, and that place definitely didnt seem like the kind of place where you need to worry about your stuff being parked across the street. The hotel was far enough off the main drag to not be a problem.

Same story for the track. That was the first time ive been to a track rental like that. For this small of a group to have an entire facility like that to ourselves is really cool. They pretty much just opened the gate and let us in to do what we wanted. There was more than enough room in the pits, the bathrooms were nice, clean, and air conditioned, and the bleachers were almost all shaded. The autox sounded like it was a good time, and how many drag strip rentals come with an oval track to set something like that up on?

Its going to be very, very hard to pick a central location that everyone will want to drive to. I drove my truck, no a/c and all, over 650 miles each direction to be there and most of that drive is through the mountains in West Virginia. It was a 12 hour +- drive for us, but it was definitely worth it. Its going to be hot in the summer, no way around that.

I had mentioned passing the crown around to Renz when i got it and he said he was planning on making more for the future meets. It will be cool if he makes a new design each time, as I would love to have another one  :p

I am for the idea of having it every other year too. I think that if you have more than one major event for the group in one year (ie Homecoming and Nats) your going to get most of the people picking out one event to attend, not both. Having a major event one year closer to the East, then the major event for the next year farther west is a good way to give everyone a chance to make it to a "National" event. For those who can afford to, they would still have a yearly meet to attend no matter East or West.

One of the pictures in another threrad shows people's names circled in chalk, and them standing in it. If we can get a hotel that gives us an area away from the other guests (like in KC), we could do that for our parking spots. Then, we could have a pic of the owner and their truck, and put it up on the site.

I thought the event went as good as could be. Logistics for something like this is difficult to say the least - especially when you are so far away. Hats off to all of you!
