boost control on PTE turbo's

im having some problems getting solid boost control on my PT52. it looks like i get about 2 to 2.5 lbs of fluctuation with the PTE set up. i followed the instructions to get 15 lbs, then i adjusted it in a little farther after several runs to achieve 16 lbs. i ended up settling for a max of 16.8 and a min of 14.

if you look here
http://e-rue.home.mindspring.com/pt52_5.uni
you can see what im talking about.
dont laugh at my slow spoolup, i still have the stock converter, and that small piece of 2.5in exhaust where the cat meets the ATR exhaust.

this,
http://e-rue.home.mindspring.com/pt52.uni
is the first run, where we had the wastgate too tight. i hit over 18lbs without it bleeding off boost, so i let off the gas, and went back to the garage to readjust.

here,

http://e-rue.home.mindspring.com/pt52_3.uni
http://e-rue.home.mindspring.com/pt52_4.uni
are several more runs where i tried to dial in the boost unsucessfully.

I havent put my 52 on yet talked to Jerry at McCoy he is still getting everything ready for me.

I have the ATR 3" setting in my dining room right now. I think you have to cut that fange off where it tappers down and splice a piece of 3" in there. Please correct me if Im wrong Ill be doing this soon myself.

E-RUE,

Is your knok sensor working? Not a 1* retard via five runs. Wow! That's impressive. I wish my boost control would be this nice with my stocker.

Peace,

Yeah I just viewed the files myself. Your spool up time is a little slow, I cant believe your not getting any retard. If timming is ok that pretty impressive.

zero knock is the only way to fly.

in these runs im running a 1 to 2 mix of 100/93octane on a T2 setting. im a little surprised i didnt get any knock on the 18lb run also, but i can rap on the TB with a wrench and the knock sensor reads it as a knock count, so im sure its working.

question:
you guys that have cut out that small section of 2.5in exhaust where the PTE cat meets the ATR exhaust... did you just remove the arched mount that holds the exhaust? seems like i would need it to hold the exhaust in place. the ATR exhaust moves around alot when i remove it. wouldnt that put undue stress back on the headers and turbo when i go around turns and bouncing through intersections? without that mount, it seems like the headers are the only thing holding the exhaust in place.

Edit - never mind I just saw file #5.

You need to get a 9/11 converter with the setup you have.

E-,

I think that you just have an incredibly strong combination. Maybe 18lbs on the T-2 setting wouldn't be a bad idea to try? Hell with no knock what-so-ever...why not give it a try?

Like I've said 100 times before, the knock sensor is NOT your savior

Check your plugs for info as well. Not saying you are knocking, just don't wanna hear bad things in a couple weeks because there was no knock retard reading when you blew the motor up

I'd double check that you have no exhaust leaks. Also, fueling will play a big part of boost control, believe it or not. May want to see how different fuel pressures help or hurt.

Also, what is your vacuum line layout? You are just adjusting base boost, correct? Not letting the chip control it?

the vacume lines are just as PTE sent them. im not using chip control. my plugs look great, i really dont have any knock. i havnt tried leaning on it at all, that may make a difference. i guess what really seems wierd to me is the spike at the shift point. seems like that actuator would respond faster. it just seems slugish to respond to engine load. i also need to cut out that neckdown in the exhaust. spool up is really slow right now, and i think the dip in boost, as well as the spool up, would improve, if i could remove a little more backpressure.

it may be that a combination of a leaner mix, and less backpressure fixes my problem. i may be running a little too rich. ill be tuning all week on it, trying different things, fixing that neckdown in the exhaust and making data passes as i go, to note any changes. we'll see what happens.

I think a leaner mix could help. Here's what I'm thinking is the issue:

The fueling is rich, you have to overcompensate with the wastegate setting to adjust boost to hit the level you would like. At shifts/TC lockup, the fueling leans out a bit, speeding up the turbo a bit (hotter faster exhaust) and creating a minor spike. I think once you dial in the fueling better (if possible w/o chip tweaks) you should have better control. The idea is to really minimize large changes in exhaust pressure.

I recently install a PTE44 with Sy/Ty housing on my truck. I also have the high pressure wastegate actuator. I played around with the actuator and noticed it doesn't have much travel. About 1/2" with 30 lbs of steady pressure and 1/4" or less with 15 lbs. Although I made my own waste gate swivle, I notice this amount of travel doesn't open the gate much. Has anyone else played around with the actuator/wastegate? How far does the gate open at 15 lbs?(20-90 degrees?)

From what I saw, it has a TON more movement than a Mitsu turbo. The Mitsu actuators have very little movement.

Also, FYI, a large amount of movement isn't really needed unless the turbo setup is really done up wrong (wrong parts picked).

E-RUE:

Im looking at that bottle neck in the exhaust also. Im taking my muffler to cat pipe in so they can build me another but out of 3 inch. I wish that such a nice exhaust setup like that were actualy 3" all the way for guys who are other than stock. I havent figured anyway to hook it up otherwise if you have any idea let me know.

All Im waiting on are the injectors, intake kit, 50lb ultimate. Ive got the ATR exhaust and the PTE 52 in already. I need to call McCoy this week and find out what the hold up is. I think its the guy that does the Chips???

TTT... E-RUE did you ever get your boost control issues figured out? Just curious if ya got that thing running 100% or not..
