boost control - no backpressure

mostly stock setup, dropped the cat out last night to put in a pipe in its place. didn't have time to get the pipe in and on the way to work today i was watching my boost levels, and even with the wastegate backed almost all the way out (longer), it still wants to climb up somewhere past 15... granted when it hits 10 i get off the gas. wondering if this is because of the stock wastegate solenoid and can i do this:
www.gnttype.org/techarea/turbo/turboport.html option #4.... thats only if i was running the downpipe, im planning on just running the highflow muffler... but was wondering if i should open the wastegate solenoid anymore like in those instructions... also DAMN its noise with no exhaust
:p wonder what the ricers will think when they see something louder than them and its NOT a honda....

say that again?

i put the pipe in finally... sounds decent, the wastegate is still in the same position (almost all the way out) when i floor it, the boost spikes up to about 8lbs and climbs up to 14 where it holds steady... i haven't done a dm yet but i ran it a few times with the same results.... it goes very quickly up to about 8-10 lbs and then slowly climbs up to 14 where it holds... thats on a stock turbo setup.

stock turbo will have booost control problems when you open the exhaust up. its a design flaw. you can remove the turbo and port the wg hole. you can use an external WG. you can try a heavier spring on the WG actuator.

If you are going to run with no cat, and open exhaust.. my suggestion.

Get an exteral gate on the cross over pipe.

Best boost control, no fixes.. you can find some good wastegates realtivly cheap.

I would even sell the one I have already welded to my crossover. It is a deltagate.. will not work with anything in the place of the Stock CCHE though.

I told another guy 200 bucks.. basically all you have to do is bolt it on.. I would like a stock cross over pipe back though. I have another gate to weld on.

Boost control was perfect with a manual boost controll and running 18 psi with a 20g

what would you recommend $$ vs reliability and performance?

so far, having JUST a high flow muffler, the boost controller off, and the wastegate backed out most of the way, it will not go above 14psi... it just takes its time getting there... 4 seconds AFTER hitting 8-10psi.. but it does not spike....

As far as performance goes... You will hit the boost target fast by having proper control there.

You will also hit the target versus spiking over, etc.

As far as straight which will make more power... both should be exactly the same.. it is only an upgrade for boost control... it may make the truck faster though..

What is actually very important is area under the curve.. if you can get to your controlled boost level faster you will be better off.

T66; I'm learning how these wastegates work. Would this gate work good with my setup:
Ultimate w/3 bar map
20g turbo
stock injectors and IC
cold air kit
no cat with muffler and 3" out
It sounds like this would be a good setup for me. Will this limit me to 18 psi or can it handle more? You said a manual boost controll would be required too right? Would you take $150 if I give you my stock x-over pipe?

I would work for your set up.. you can for any boost level.

It has a 9 psi spring and a manual controller. So you can get any level from 9 psi to I think the controller will go to 32 psig.

As far as cost goes.. this is probably not the forum for a selling parts.. email me at nick.steffens@usionline.net

the external wg on the crossover is an excellent idea but remember the chip will not be able to control the boost anymore. You will need a bleeder or an electronic controller.

As for the deltagate, it is undersized also. I would suggest something like a good HKS wg, racegate, or an INnovative turbo progate. The deltagate might work fine on a stockish truck, but it is rated for ~350hp. Seen as how we make quite a bit of torque, your boost may or may not be as solid as you would like.

Every truck I have ever done a big ext. wg on the crossover has had picture perfect boost.

the tials are typically pretty small, but 40mm sounds somewhat large. It seems that everyone measures there wgs different. FOr example the HKS 45mm is smaller then a racgate or progate. the progate is the same size as the racegate, but it performs better.
