Binding in reverse

Went out today with the scanner hooked up to see how everything was doing. Made a pass with a boost launch and when I went to turn around I had trouble with reverse. It felt like I was on the brakes, it moved but had to go into boost to do it. Drives fine in forward gears. Put the truck in the air in neutral and all 4 wheels spin backwards as easy as they go forward. Can spin them all backward at the same time without much effort. Seems to be the tranny, anyone had this happen? Curious to what would have broken in there.
Thanks.

Yep, a shattered rear planet is what bound up in mine. If thats what happened to you then its time for a rebuild.

Re: Binding in reverse

I cant have the vehicle down for a rebuild because its my only truck. I can still drive in forward gears and a little in reverse if I have to. While I save for a rebuild and have it done could I put in a turbo 350 trans? I have a built turbo 350 that is out of my 2wd 87 blazer. It is apart so the trans, driveshaft, and crossmember are all sitting in my garage. Would it go in the same as it would a 2wd? I'm not going to use the AWD if I do this, it would just be a temporary fix.

Re: Binding in reverse

it sounds very plausible to slip a 350 turbo in for a temp fix, drop out the tranny, xfer and swap the crossmember. if you're running a vacum modulator make sure you put a check valve on it. not sure how the driveshaft would fit though, depends on where you setup the 350 in the other truck

Re: Binding in reverse

Tranny fixed itself. Reverse started working again for no reason. I drove it to the movies Friday night and when we left a friend wanted to go for a ride so I did some doughnuts in the parking lot of the theater and didnt use reverse all night after that(only drove a couple miles). Then Saturday when I backed out of my driveway it worked fine and has worked ever since. I'm guessing it will go soon but its not done yet so I got lucky for now. Looks like I wont have to do the 2wd conversion for a little while longer. Hopefully I'll get my tax return before it goes.
