Basic Modifications

Hello SyTy Forum Gurus,

I will be buying a Syclone in a couple weeks. I am familiar with turbo cars in general and I have put in a lot of hours working on my other cars so I'm not scared of turning a wrench. What I want to know is what kind of basic modifications can I do to my truck to get into the low 12's or high 11's? Can I do this with the stock turbo?

Also, since I live in the People's Republic of Karlifornia, any modifications that I do to the engine has to be smog legal, nonvisible or at least appear stock so I can pass the visual check of emissions testing.

Re: Basic Modifications

For only a couple hundred dollars and a lot of time high 12's are possible. Do some searching and you will find a lot. High 11's probably arent gonna happen with a stock turbo although some people are close. low 12's would be hard to do since you are new to syty's. If I think about it later I'll give you some links when I get home.

Re: Basic Modifications

I looked through the forums and this is what I've come up with so far:

1. Upgrade fuel pump and rewire it.
2. 50# injectors
3. 3 bar map sensor
4. Datalogger
5. Chip
6. Upgrade intercooler water pump
7. Hotwire intercooler pump
8. Adding an aux CAC
9. Boost controller

What else can I add to the list or what is not necessary?

Re: Basic Modifications

Looks like a good plan, you should have a pretty quick, reliable setup with those mods. If you want to get really serious there's always bigger turbos and Alky. Welcome to the boards, and enjoy your Sy!

It all depends on what you want to do.. if you want 11's start saving for a trans build, higher stall torque converter, trans cooler, and turbo/dp compo. I'd also add to your list above an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and alky or meth injection

Re: Basic Modifications

You can gain some from a TCC lockup switch and porting the exhaust on the stock turbo and bellmouthing the inlet. External wastegates give better boost control also and then you can put a dump on the downpipe wfor when you are at the track(without different wastegate it will overboost).

If 11's means beefing up the tranny, then I guess I'll just try to get low 12's until the tranny needs a rebuild.

I will look into an adjustable fpr. If I get one, it will have to be one that looks stock or that I can hide. How much boost can I run on 91 octane before it starts knocking? I know it is different with different cars. I know local DSMs can get up to 20 psi before they need race gas or a knock supressant but I start seeing knock in my Stealth when I go over 16 psi.

Here is a newb question, does the Cyclone have a stock knock sensor?

Re: Basic Modifications

Yup, the Syclones and Typhoons have one knock sensor. Some people can run 17lbs of boost with good boost control and proper timing, while others can barely make 12lbs before knock. Its mostly dependant on proper timing and boost control, as well as IATs:2cents:

Why do you have to have a AFPR that looks stock or that you can hide? I have a bright blue KB one on mine and some other modifications that don't look stock (K&N)...I'm also in Cali. Just find a "good" shop to smog it....lol....but seriously, a AFPR won't affect the visual test.

I wish I knew of a "good" shop in Sacramento. Dragnet hit my area last year and now the smog shops are scared to death that everyone coming in for a smog test is an undercover cop. Last year when I went to smog my Stealth, the smog tech got nervous because I had an aftermarket fuel loop between the front and rear fuel rails. It was a fuel loop as in just a straight pipe that I installed to even out the pressure better between my fuel rails, nothing special.

What I may end up doing is getting an afpr, grinding off any manufacturer decals and then sanding the rest of it down to bare metal so it looks stock.

Looks like my mods. I have the atr afpr and it looks close to stock. It passed smog when I bought it. Now....I dont know. I would recomend the Phil Chip. He can burn a special smog program to help pass smog. I have a friend who does smog and will overlook a few things. There is a trick to pull the tan wire when you smog but it will throw a check engine light and drives like crap. There is a GN shop in sac. that did my trans. so far its great and shifts hard. I would also recomend a guage pod with at least a boost and trans temp guage. A upgraded front shaft should be on the list if you are looking for low 12's. I can run 12lbs with no KR but at 16lbs I get about 5* right now. I bought some "paint thinner" xylene to see if its false Kr. I think it is.(hope). I have yet to make it out to the track but I am guessing based on racing my friend who have been, I am in the low 13's or high 12's even with the KR. Good luck with the truck.
