Bad VC I think

Hi. My name is Ryan. I have a '91 Syclone. I believe that the VC is bad. I've done all the research on all the tests, I jacked the truck up and pulled the front propshaft. I feel resistence but for some reason the truck doesn't seem like it has AWD. I went to the track today and the rear tires were spinning at 2 lbs. of boost. But prior to this, I believe the VC was locked because I could feel it dragging like it was in 4WD. Any suggestions?

Little bit of info about my truck:
4L80E swap
alluminum rear drive shaft
front propshaft
RPM coilover front suspension
(these are the only mods that I think would affect this)
Any suggestions and comments will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Ryan

What test tid you do? The one DaveP advocates is the best. If you have confirmed no resistanrce and the clutch is bad then you need to R&R the unit.

Pics? VIN?

Welcome to the forum, you'll figure it out using the resources on here I am sure.

Here's the short version of DaveP's test.

DaveP said:
Here's the torque test, abbreviated version:

Trans in neutral.
Rear output locked so it can't turn. (Bar through u-joint pushed against floor or frame is fine).
Torque wrench on nut on front output yoke.
Turn front output CW with torque wrench.

At 40ft lbs, it should take 10-12 seconds to turn yoke 90º.

If you can't turn it at all it's locked. Replace it.
If the torque falls off to well below 40 after a few degrees, it's failed 'open'. This won't break parts like the locked will, but you won't have the full benefits of AWD. And the truck won't move with the front propshaft removed.

Re: Bad VC I think

Hey Ryan,

Ironic that I am in Bristol (am in Torrington quite a bit) and gave quite a bit of thought to buying this truck (afterall when Dave became President, I was going to be his VP) but the timing wasn't just right. Now the truck is about a 25 minute ride from me. Feel free to contact me if you need some help.

BTW, as time goes by, I am seeing that there are more trucks in CT than I thought. An old Getty station at the top of East Main (next to DD) has repaired a few (saw a black Ty there a couple of weeks ago). Some guy in New Milford has a few, some guy that owns a detail shop in Torrington owns a low mileage Ty (maybe you?), guy in Bristol owns 3 (not me - I only have 2) and some others.

Re: Bad VC I think

I have used a similar test to the one Dave spoke about for years, that has been about the same way I have used also.I think pat slogn also found something else that broke in the tcase before that did this, think it was a stuck planetary.

Re: Bad VC I think

also do they make a performance VC or just the stock one if so were can i get it

Thanks
Ryan

The stock one has been into the eights. You going faster than that? prob not. just routine maintenance and the once every 20 years rebuild is fine.
