AWD Transfer Case

I was wondering if the same TC (bw4472) that could be found in the Safari/ Bravada would work in a 2nd gen S-10 (1994 and up) with 4x4 or would I need to find a later model out something else? How many parts and how much fabrication is needed to do this conversion? Do I need to get the drive shafts recut? What about the input/ output splines?

IDK all the diffs, but at some point they went to a PW modulated clutch in the bravada case.
If it's a 4472 like the typhoon has then I believe it uses the 32 spline rear output so you would need to change the rear drive shaft front yoke.

Front driveshaft flanges are different between 4X4 and AWD. Length is probably the same, but not sure if the 4X4 t-case front output yoke has the same spline as the AWD t-case (ie can it be swapped).

Another difference is the adapter between the trans and t-case is different for 4X4 and AWD. They look the same, but the 'clock' position is about 15º different. The front shaft will rub on the floorpan if a BW case is installed with the 4X4 (NP231 or 233) adapter.

That is the NP146 T-case. Completely different than the BW case. Usage began with the 1998 model year. The controller requires a "Class B Data Buss" input that contains the fifth digit of the VIN ( T, K, or L) to 'know' what it is installed in in order to operate properly. I have never found or read of a way to install this controller into an older OBD I vehicle.

To be technically correct, its the NV136. New Venture never built a NV146 (1 = single speed, "4" capacity rating, 6 = electronic clutch control).

Your choices in that family are NV136 (Bravada & Astro), NV236 (auto 4wd Blazers and such), and NV246 (heavier tcase found in K series trucks / SUV's with 4L80E's). You can build a NV246 as a 146 by eliminating some parts, which is what was done for the tcase in my '99 Bravada.

I would agree that swapping the controller or coming up with an alternate way to utilize this tcase would be quite difficult for most. And any possible benefits would be far out-weighed by the hassle / difficulty in executing the swap.
