Anybody ever heard of this tranny type?

A friend of mine is looking to buy a 79 Camaro that his boss has decided to get rid of since it's just sitting in his garage, and has been for a rather long time. He showed me a couple of pictures of it from the outside, and it looks rather taken care of. Now here's where I got lost...

Apparently it has a 4 speed automatic+overdrive, making it a 5 speed automatic for all intents and purposes. From what my friend could remember, it was an entire B & M hydro-something transmission. I've never heard of them making a 5 speed, and seeing as it's the weekend, I can't exactly call up B & M and ask them.

I asked a car guy that I go to church with, and he said that he knew that B & M had done up some prototypes many, many years ago, but never knew if any made it to the market. Any of you older guys hear of anything like this?

If it sounds solid, I was actually thinking of buying the car just for the transmisison to put in the GT and handing the pink slip to my friend. It's only a 500 dollar car so I figure, if it checks out, it'd be worth it. I'm going to try and go see it/test drive it with him some time this week, then I'll know for sure. TIA

You should crawl under there and snap a picture for us, that's the only sure way to know what it has. Most can tell from the pan.

I never heard of it. Sound like someone install a 700R4 swap and put a gear/vendor over-under unit on it. I do have a 1966 6 speed automatic trans in the garage. One time it shifted so hard I broke a driveshaft in half. :rotf: I might put it in the 1970 Indy Pacecar I have.

I never heard of it. Sound like someone install a 700R4 swap and put a gear/vendor over-under unit on it. I do have a 1966 6 speed automatic trans in the garage. One time it shifted so hard I broke a driveshaft in half. :rotf: I might put it in the 1970 Indy Pacecar I have.

The gear vendors unit effiectively "splits" the gears, so it'd theoretically be an 8 speed if it was a 700 with a GV overdrive.

Well, my bud went and drove it yesterday while I was at school *bastard* and he said it shifts hard and shifted into a fifth one. He didn't really look closely but he said something about a box at the enod the tranny? I can't remember now... I still have to go take a look for myself.
