It's official, I finally got my rack and pinion done. I think it seems like a decent way to do it but if anyone has doubts feel free to let me know.

I made a bracket that bolts to the control arm bolts and to the front diff. Then I used the inner tie rod ends of the Typhoon and had adjustable sleeves made to connect to the rack. I used an 89 Mustang GT rack and then used Borgeson joints for the steering shaft. Here are the pics;

Oh hell no! You have to cut the upper diff mount out and rework the metal for the frame pad. Not a project for the weekend warrior or bolt on guys. I just made mine removable for servicing reasons.

Nice work. I would like to hear the results of driving it. Are you going to build headers around the steering? It may be the angle of the pictures but the steering shaft looks pretty close to the block.

Actually, the headers I built fit perfect which I used RPM's as a guide. Stock manifolds do not fit however. Unfortunately it will be a while before I get to drive it since my motor is taking forever, I dropped the block off 5 months ago and he still hasn't really started on it.

Looks good.. Is that diff mount rubber isolated? I'm not sure if it will matter or not but the other 3 mount points for it are rubber isolated.. It may put a lot of extra stress on that new mount if its not.. You'll like it.. Other than the squeaks and rattles you will forget that you are driving a 20 year old truck.. Mine tracks nice and straight now and you don't have to fight at all to keep it straight..

It's not and I thought long and hard about that. I decided not to do it because I figure it would more or less be for vibration, plus I was getting lazy since this was taking two months. If it turns out to cause problems I can always remove it and add.

Excellent work. I thought that with new wheel bearings, the jeep shaft, polygraphite bushings, Raybestos-Pro ball joints and a quick ratio gearbox that my truck would feel tight. It doesn't. A rack is still on my "to-do" list.

If you don't mind my asking, what was the sum invested? Rack, joints, rose bearing and tie rod sleeves et plus metal - I'm guessing around $400?

Really impressive Mike. Great work.

Does this setup have any bump steer issues at all? or do you plan on measuring it?

Is there any loss in travel of the spindles?

I hate to be the critic, but those U-joint angles look kind of large...could just be the angles of the camera. Also, your shock bolt needs to be replaced with a longer one. It doesn't look like you have full thread engagement. Besides that, it looks great. Add me to the "can't wait to drive it" list :tup:

Looks to me like that bolt/nut is on the last thread. Always nice to have at least one thread showing, especially with a self-locking nut. Mike can fix that in a flash. The u-joints look good except the last at the rack. That angle will make non linear rotation, if that's the term, but I doubt he'll feel it. I'm just glad the headers will fit. Looks real close there. I'd like to see a pic of the mockup if Mike has one.

I can take a pic of that. I still have to get rid of the headers though because I built them for my 67GTQ and Vortec heads. They don't fit the Bowtie heads I got nor do they fit for the 76mm turbo I got.

As for the bolt, there are two other bolts you don't see that are also no long enough. Everything is coming back off so I can paint the frame and all nuts and bolts will be examined at that time and replaced if need be. So don't worry Austin, I got it covered. And the angles of the joints are less than 35* like Borgeson requires. Wheel turns nice and smooth.

You should put together a kit with all the hard parts (except for any of the fabrication of the rack bracket). I'd be interested.
