Adding 2nd stop pin--Stopping needle Spinning around.

Its all ABOOT the SYTY eh
Hey all, My oil pressure needle spun right around. Like so many others here have this same problem. I just got sick of seeing it below the needle. So today, I wanted to fix it. So I wanted to show the steps I took to complete this.

First off, You have to go to your local junk yard and go find a turbo sunbird dash (could use other GM dashes but not sure) smash it and gently pull the pins out. I used a pair of needle nose with a rag on it so the pliers don't damage the needle.

If you want a larger picture. Click here for my Gallery to the larger versions of the same photos below.
This is what the needle looks like. Pin & base.

Now, you have to remove the dash, I won't go into detail as you can use the instructions from the indiglo dash install on sytyarchives.

Here is what the dash looks like apart.

Now, place the base of the pin on where you want to drill the hole. Make a small mark so you can use it when you need to drill.

THe drill bit I used was a 9/64 bit. Here are some pics of the dimentions of the pin.

Width of base with pin inserted.

Diameter of 9/64 drill bit.

Depth of pin. So you know how far to drill in.

What I did was measure out 4.16mm on my drill but and put tape on it. So when I was drilling I would stop at the tape. The drill I used has a multispeed selection, I ran the drill on the slowest speed. Becareful it goes in fairly fast, you don't need to put any pressure on the drill.

Here is a pic of the gauge with the hole for the pin drilled in.

With pin installed.

Now you reverse the disassembly steps to put it back together.

Here is a pic of the gauge back in the truck.

I would love to do this to all of my clusters. Problem is, where I live there are no GM products in the bone yards to steal parts from (no GM dealers or cars here) and the speedo shops I have called won't sell them. Guess I'm just screwed?

G I don't know how about the specific rare parts from them.. the gauge cluster, the ecm.. both of those work on sytys too :D

they are pretty peppy for a lil 4cyl too

well one cluster is no good, which I smashed the cluster to get the pins. The ECM was there but no way to tell if they are good... I will try to go back this wednesday or thursday to see what kind of price they can give. And I will try to get more pins.

Hey Rob, get a chance to get back to the bonee yard yet? If you can scroung up 3 or 4 pins (got three trucks) and drop'em in the mail to me i'll shoot you some $.

haha, interesting. Your truck has many more stop pins than mine does.... I have no bottom pin, so when my needle flips it just comes back up from the bottom again
